Unit 1—Introduction CJ422: Human Resource Development for the Criminal Justice Professional

Unit 1: Introduction –Textbook- Management and Supervision in Law Enforcement - Bennett & Hess (5 th edition) –This week’s reading: Chapter One “The Law Enforcement Organization”

Unit 1: Introduction Course Description: This course is aimed at criminal justice professionals looking to increase their knowledge and potential within the field of human resource development. The course will blend human resource development with sociology, psychology, and ethics, based within the criminal justice context. The course will look in detail at leadership development and management. Students will study the importance of effective communication, as well as the impact of diversity on individual and group behavior. Students will read case studies examining race, gender, and power dynamics within a criminal justice framework. Topics will include managing authority and power, racial profiling, controlling disciplinary problems within the workforce, coping with low morale, managing internal and external politics at work, as well as how best to manage crisis conflicts.

Unit 1: Introduction Community era –working with the community –establishing trust –decreasing fear of the police. Working to solve crimes, identify patterns.

Unit 1: Introduction Do not forget – your first major assignment is due next week. Benefits of Community Policing Establishing and implementing community policing can be a major challenge to management. Human resource development is key in this process. In 2 pages, identify the major technical, administrative, conceptual, and people skills required to be effective within the field of human resource development, as related to establishing an effective community policing program. Provide examples of why these skills are necessary.
