17 Technical Committee Membership Solicitation for nominees each summer (August) AIAA at large Technical Committees Aerospace America Committee membership selection is chairman’s responsibility Regular Membership limited to 35 Larger membership only with TAC approval Three-year term; 1 May to 30 April Term exceptions (both less than & more than three years) Attend at least two meetings a year Should maintain a balanced composition Affiliation Professional interest Geographic location Gender Associate, International and Alumni members – 15 additional positions

18 Program Committee Membership Dynamic Membership  Addresses an important and current program or area of interest Chair must be an AIAA Member No membership limit  Appropriate membership from outside the Institute’s membership is encouraged PCs are reviewed for relevance periodically

19 Regional Deputy Director Responsibilities Advise and assist Sections with technical programs (e.g. symposia, lecturers, local TCs). Communicate with the Technical Officer for each section as often as possible. If there is no Technical Officer, maintain a meaningful and continuing liaison with appropriate individual(s) in the Sections. Collect and disseminate information on other Regional technical programs/activities that may be useful to local Sections in formulating or improving their local programs. Develop an "ideas that work" list for the Sections.

20 Regional Deputy Director Responsibilities - 2 Alert Sections as to when a technical meeting will be in their area. Encourage Sections to set goals/objectives for technical programming and to communicate said goals/objectives to the Deputy Director. Participate in the Regional Leadership Conference. Convey information from the Technical Activities Committee (TAC) meeting to the Regions and Sections. Communicate Region and Section activities to the Committee. Attend at least two meetings of TAC. At these meetings, report on sections, technical activities, actions taken, and pertinent information from the RAC meeting.

21 Current Regional Deputy Directors - Technical Region I – Stephen Rizzi Region II– Thomas Mensah Region III – Robert Bruckner Region IV – vacant Region V – James Casler Region VI – Jane Hansen Region VII – Christian Mari

22 Challenges for TAC and RSAC Little overlap between TAC and RSAC activities In general, those who are active in Technical Activities are less active in Sections and visa versa (there are exceptions) While TAC conferences occur in near active Sections, we do a poor job of reaching out to the Sections and Regions Poor utilization of our Regional Deputies

23 Areas for Collaboration Promoting Young Professional activities  Support YPC events and receptions  Facilitate their participation in our committees  They are the key to our Institute’s future Technical Activities speakers list  Augment Distinguished Lecturers list Region/Section sponsored sessions or tracks at Technical Conferences Joint TAC/RSAC Workshops  Last one held at ASM in January 2007

24 Brainstorm Session What are your ideas??? Feel free to contact me any time:  Basil Hassan,

AIAA Event Model and Conference Portfolio Transformation Briefing to AIAA Regional Leadership Conference Basil Hassan AIAA Vice President Technical Activities 3 August 2012

The Need for Change … Our profession is evolving and AIAA must change with it  More emphasis in the industry on integrating systems and disciplines. AIAA must be in a position to support these growth areas.  Our membership numbers are in slow decline and we are not retaining membership in the young professional ranks.  Our conferences have evolved to more focused events that only attract a portion of the aerospace community.  Many in our profession, primarily those in industry (who make up nearly half our membership), do not find our current conference offerings relevant to their jobs. 26

How TAC Responded to Need for Change Sent out surveys to those who attend AIAA events and those who don’t and asked them to comment on their value and relevancy Performed an assessment of event portfolio using survey feedback Held a workshop in January 2012 to discuss a new event model Engaged with TAC and Institute stakeholders for solicit more feedback Did more assessment 27

How TAC Responded to Need for Change (cont.) Defined principles/goals for new events Ensure our Institute is relevant to aerospace professionals Ensure our conferences integrate a spectrum of topics of interest to the profession (technical disciplines, systems, policy, operations, etc.) Ensure our overall events provide meaningful professional development and interaction opportunities to the broad aerospace community Ensure our events are financially viable Ensure that our conferences are “must attend” events for all those in our profession and can accommodate expansion into new technology and program areas 28

How TAC Responded to Need for Change (cont.) Developed a “best-of-the-best” hybrid approach  Consolidated and Integrated Models were most favored of models discussed at workshop  Hybrid model combines the best attributes of both models – collocate conferences within an overarching umbrella “Forum”  Ensures alignment to principles/goals for new event model 29

Implementing the Change AIAA Board of Directors approved moving to new “hybrid” event model at its 10 May meeting Transition starting in January 2014 Have the opportunity to start making changes with 2013 events (e.g., Space, Aviation) Starting to assess and implement new approaches for the 2014 events 30

Planned Forums AIAA Science and Technology Forum Exposition (Winter) – open meeting AIAA Defense and Security Forum and Exposition (Winter/Spring) – classified meeting AIAA Aviation and Aeronautics Forum and Exposition (Early Summer) – open and some US- only sessions AIAA Propulsion and Energy Forum and Exposition (Mid Summer) – open and some US-only sessions AIAA Space and Astronautics Forum and Exposition (Late Summer) – open and some US-only sessions 31

Program Structure for Forums Three-Tiered Structure  Plenary – provides the aerospace professional insight into the opportunities and challenges that face the aerospace industry  Integration – provides the aerospace professional the ability to engage in cross-cutting topics and solutions to system level challenges  Discipline – provides the aerospace professional the opportunity to engage in technical exchange on focused topics of interest 32

How You Can Help Understand that all areas of the Institute are stakeholders in the success of the new event model Think of ways events can help regions and sections and vice versa Identify section activities to have at events that come to your area Identify activities within event that help advance RSAC’s goals 33
