2 2014 State of the Group All 14 TCs remain active and reasonably healthy  Emphasis on recruiting new members and reenergizing subcommittees with fresh ideas on many of the TCs  New Small Satellite TC remains strong and engaged Continued the initiative to increase number and role of young members within SMG  2014 Young Prof. Award winner completing term as a Dep. Dir.  Nominations open for the 2015 Young Prof. of the Year Award Continued strong educational outreach activities  PDR and CDR support for 2014 Can Sat competition  STEM teacher grants Continued to improve TC cooperation 2

3 SMG Awards in 2014 2014 Haley Award (James Newman) 2014 Space Science Award (Mike Trela) 2014 George M. Low Award (European ATV Program) 2014 SMG Young Professional of the Year Award ($500) STEM teacher grants ($500 grants to K-12 teachers for use in procuring programs and supplies for engaging STEM education – SSTC and STTC collaborated together with the Challenger Center) Best Presentation Awards (2 at $100 each) presented at the AIAA Region I Young Professional, Student, and Education Conference 3

4 SMG Organization in 2014 New SMG Director – Peter Montgomery (May) New SMG Deputy Directors  Kate Stambaugh (January) – One year term as a Deputy Director as 2014 Young Professional of the Year Award winner  Scott Jensen (August), replaced Mike Mattis as he departed due to increased workload challenges Deputy Directors Continuing to Serve SMG  Jeff Puschell  Karen Barker Reviewing Member Services, Knowledge Services, Products, and Public Policy matrix responsibilities 4

5 SMG Forum Support in 2014 AIAA Space and Astronautics Forum 2014  Streamed plenary and panel sessions  Coordinated w/ Small Sat TC to promote interest at Small Sat Conference AIAA Defense and Security Forum 2015 Organization  March 10-12, 2015 at JHU APL Kossiakoff Center  MSTC and WSETC collaborating on organization leadership  Combines former Missile Sci., Strategic & Tactical Missiles, and Weapon System Effect. meetings AIAA Space and Astronautics Forum 2015 Organization  “New Face of Space” Perspective and Future Thinking  Young professionals partnered with experienced veterans 5

6 New SMG Initiatives in 2014 “Lessons Learned During a Career in S&M” Forums  Experienced speakers sharing lessons learned  Forum documented and recorded for the future  Next gen. engineers specifically invited, but open to all  Karen Barker is leading this initiative SMG Innovation Working Group  Designed to identify new approaches, introduce new ways of thinking, and support Institute innovative activities as appropriate  Current Focus: SMG TC interactions and communications  Young Professional of the Year Award winner leads initiative 6

7 New SMG Initiatives in 2014 SMG “Lunch and Learns”  Provides industry developments, accomplishments, and timely achievement recognition  Scott Jensen is leading this initiative SMG Mentoring Program  Experienced professionals sharing knowledge with those that desire to learn and grow their careers  Jeff Puschell is leading this initiative 7

8 SMG Initiatives Placed on Hold in 2014 Best TC Competition  1 st Place ($1000)  2 nd Place ($750)  3 rd Place ($500)  Most Improved TC ($500)  Halted due to funding cuts  Impacting STEM and other educational outreach activities previously funded through these awards SMG Exceptional Service Award  Recognition for outstanding contributions from a TC member  Vehicle to recognize the “stars” of SMG  Halted due to funding cuts 8

9 Summary All SMG TCs remain strong and actively engaged A smooth SMG leadership transition has allowed continuity in approaches and key initiatives and minimized impact SMG leadership changes are also providing opportunities for the introduction of many new ideas and innovation New initiatives have been identified to address areas of need discussed frequently by SMG members 2015 watch areas include introduction of new members into the TCs as appropriate, young professional engagement, and implementation of innovative approaches for activities Primary Concern: Funding cut impacts to educ. outreach 9
