Steam Energy Energy that comes from the push of steam

When water boils, it turns into a gas This gas is called steam

Steam can push objects and move them Any matter that is moving is using mechanical energy

Steam is a source of mechanical energy

Steam is made in a boiler A boiler has a large tank and a furnace

The tank holds water, and the furnace burns fuel to heat the water Coal, oil, and wood are three (3) kinds of fuel used to produce steam

When the fuel burns, the chemical energy stored in it changes into heat energy The heat energy heats the water in the boiler and changes it into steam

You have learned that wind and water can turn wheels with blades Steam can also turn wheels with blades

Steam Turbine A kind of wheel with blades that is moved by steam

The energy from steam turbines can be used in many ways

Many large ships get their energy from steam engines The steam turbines on these ships turn the ships’ propellers

Propellers make the ships move through the water

Steam turbines are also used to make electricity Energy from the turbines is used to run generators which make electricity

Many large electric power plants have steam turbines
