Interviewing Basics

Definitions Behavior Example Skill Intuition Structured Interview Skills Analysis Rapport Building Questions Seeking Contrary Information Open-Ended Questions Controlling the interview

Behavioral Example, Skill and Intuition Description of a specific life-history event. Skill is a behavior that is observable, measurable and trainable. Relying on intuition allows interviewers to reflect their biases against candidates.

Structured Interview, Skills Analysis, Rapport Building Pre planned questions based on requirements for a specific job Analysis done by looking at job requirements through review of a job description. Rapport puts candidate at ease.

Seeking Contrary, Open-Ended, Controlling the Interview Ask questions that will provide evidence about mistakes, weaknesses, or problems in the past. Open encourages lengthy answers Without controlling the interview talkative candidates take away time to gain enough information about the candidates skills.

5 Practical purposes for an interview Evaluate the candidates ability to perform the job Evaluate the candidates fit to the job Provide a realistic job preview Sell the job Complete the profile

Why traditional interviews don’t work. Lack of clear interview purpose Lack of clearly defined position competencies Lack of interview structure Lack of preparation Poor follow up questions Legal liability Allowing bias to influence the interview

Planning and Conducting Plan the interview –Thoroughly review job requirements –Decide what skills are essential for good performance on the job –Review resume or app Create interview plan –Select job related questions which will help the applicant give behavioral examples –Write questions out so to cover all main points in the interview

Planning and Conducting Arrange for an interview environment –Be sure no interruptions –Candidate comfortable –Plan time… 45 minutes to an hour –Don’t keep candidate waiting Conduct the interview –Rapport building –Open ended questions –Allow silence –Takes specific notes –Seek Contrary evidence –Control the pace –Gain behavioral examples –“Sell”
