NQs in English

 National 4 – internal assessments only.  National 5 – internal and external assessments; AVU back-up; Literacy unit add-on.  Higher – internal and external assessments.  Advanced Higher – internal and external assessments. Key features

 Unlike some other subjects, not structured around distinct blocks of work on a certain topic; no ‘end of unit’ tests.  Course is about the development of skills in the areas of reading, writing, talking & listening.  Lots of cross-over between these areas; transferable skills.  On-going assessment – we try to find evidence to contribute to unit passes in all the work we look at.  Scottish Set Text at N5 and Higher. How is the course structured?

 Keeping on top of workload and attending class is vital.  Adopt the mind set that ALL work counts.  Pay attention to deadlines issued for assessments and submission of key pieces of work.  Seek support quickly if you are struggling. What does this mean for pupils?

 Class teachers.  SFL department for specific concerns.  Peer support.  The SQA website has information about coursework submissions, past papers, etc.  BBC Bitesize has good resources in all areas, also covers most of the Scottish Set Text options at N5 and Higher. Sources of Support
