By: John Brunner & Fletcher Groseclos 1930's  Clothing and Styles   Lipstick became more and more popular during the thrities with intense colors, specifically a deep red. One UK newspaper even described kissing as "out of style" because of the high cost of lipstick. Lipstick did stain horribly because of the deep red colors and recieved a bad reputation, a problem manufacuruers still try to correct to this day. Eye brows were plucked to a very thin line, some woman even settled for complete removal and a pencil substitue. this was conrasted with false eyelashes to enhance the eyes. Finger nails were grown to a long length, longer than had ever been fashionable before and fetured deep red colors such as the lips while pink toe nail polish was more popular. rouge was also important during this time By: John Brunner & Fletcher Groseclos

Women's League of Health and Beauty   Some sources regard the women's health and beauty movement of the 1930's as the women's suffrage movement of the 1910's. Physical fitness was seen as important in the thirties. Slowly it became more appropriate and understandable for women to wear less while playing sports or doing any physical activity because it would allow them to move. Skating skirts became shorter than ever before and in 1933 the Tennis star Alice Marble wore shorts at the Wimbledon season.  Summer Olympics 1900 Justine Henin, 2006 A great example of clothing change is in women's tennis wear.

Female Dress Beach Fashions 1938 Catolog Beach Dress was one fashion the movement for health and beauty impacted. Although still very modest compared to today's standards, the woman was allowed to wear less clothing and still be considered appropriate This included above knee cut skirts, less sleeves, and lower cut tops

Male Hair Styles President Franklin D. Roosevelt Louis Armstrong   President Franklin D. Roosevelt            Louis Armstrong Two popular figures in the thirties. FDR was in more of a position to influence, not just hair style, but in formal clothing as well, since he was the president.   Louis Armstrong was a jazz musician in the '30s. Notice the wide lapels of his suit and the bowtie. Bowties were much more common in the thirties than today, obbviously. In this picture of Armstrong, his hair is closley cut and generally looks like a typical African-American hairstyle would today.

Male Hair Styles Common Male Hair Styles                                  Common Male Hair Styles common hairstyles of the '30s. The one on the far right is a German officer in the late 1930s. The other two are common American hairstyles. Hair was usually comed over (as the second picture illustrates).

Male Hair Styles                                   This man's hair is comed back. This was typical for the time period, as well.

Male Dress Beachwear Farm Clothing Formal Attire   Beachwear               Farm Clothing              Formal Attire     Little variation in beachwear and farm (common) clothing. High socks were worn with long-sleeved shirts. Collared shirts were immensley popular. Suits and ties of the '30s were similar to today's. Many people wore hats with their suits in this time period.

Male Dress Formal Attire Children's Clothing Golf Clothing      Formal Attire           Children's Clothing        Golf Clothing Children were generally more formal with their clothing. They sometimes wore hats like the one in the picture in the middle.   Golf attire was similar to beachwear and farm attire with the pants, shirt, and socks.

Footwear & Other Accessories                                                                 Aris Allen Black 1930s                 1930s Tie      Velvet Oxford       1930s Heel The Oxford Heel shoe was a common women's shoe worn during this time period.   The ties of the thirties were similar to today's ties (one of few accessories of the Thirties that was similar to accessories of today. Ties did, however, become narrower between those time periods).

Footwear & Other Accessories                            Hats in 1930                                   1935         1936                                          1937 There was a huge variation in women's hats during this time period because hats served a purpose. Some hats were worn for a sporty appeal, others for a flirtatious appeal, etc.

Undergarments Kestos Bra Y Front Briefs She's got a flask!   Before the 1930's underwear was designed around durablity rather than comfort and appearence. Bras:They used quality cotton lace and net. One famous bra designed in the 1930s was the Kestos bra and later the Kestos Utility Bra shown right.  The 1920's saw a large increase in female promiscuintity with the popularization of the flapper. This led to a large increase in the focus on female undergarnment design. One of the major improments made to the femail underwear industry twas the garder belt. Although it existed long before the thirties, the design and apperarence of all women's undergarments became a major industry. The correst renamed the girdle was very popoular  in the 1930's World War I soldiers were issued button-front shorts as underwear. The buttons attached to a separate piece of cloth, or "yoke", sewn to the front of the garment, and tightness of fit was adjusted by means of ties on the sides. This style of durable, loose shorts was the men's underwear norm until 1935. On 19 January 1935, Coopers Inc. sold the world's first briefs in Chicago. Because the support they provided was similar to a jock strap they briefs were nicknamed jockey. Jockey briefs were so popular that over 30,000 pairs were sold within three months of their introduction. Coopers  renamed the company Jockey as we all know it today. Despite the similarites the boxer briefs which combine the tightness of briefs with the style and length of boxers were not "born" until the 1990's. She's got a flask!
