2 Classic A style or design that continues to be popular over an extended period of time even though fashion changes. Classics remain in fashion year after year. Examples: blazers, denim blue jeans, and penny loafers

3 Color Hue; a vision sensation, element of design, the most important factor when a retailer sells garments.

4 Details Specific elements (collar, sleeves, shoulder treatments) within a silhouette that provide form or shape.

5 Fad A temporary, passing fashion that has great appeal to many people for a short period of time.

6 Faux Fake; imitation

7 Hue Technical name for color; name given to a color, such as red or yellow, that distinguishes one color from another

8 Line A group of styles and designs that are produced and sold as a set of new selections for a given season.

9 The overall form or outline of an outfit or clothing style.
Silhouette The overall form or outline of an outfit or clothing style.

10 The way a surface looks and feels, including garments and accessories.
Texture The way a surface looks and feels, including garments and accessories. *Snake Skin *Crocodile Skin

11 Trimmings Decorative materials such as buttons, laces, and braids that are added to enhance the design.

12 Argyle A knitting pattern of varicolored, diamond-shaped areas on a solid background.

13 A durable cut-pile fabric with vertical ribs usually made of cotton.
Corduroy A durable cut-pile fabric with vertical ribs usually made of cotton.

14 Flannel A soft woven cloth of wool, or a blend of wool and cotton or synthetics used in undergarments and sleepwear.

15 Herringbone A pattern consisting of rows of short, slanted parallel lines with the direction of the slant alternating row by row; used in masonry, parquetry, embroidery, and weaving.

16 Houndstooth A woven fabric design of continuous broken checks or four-pointed stars so named because it resembles the jagged teeth of a hound; also called four-and-four check.

17 Jersey Knit A smooth, light-weight knit used for dresses, skirts,
sportswear, and underwear.

21 Tweed A sturdy fabric made from wool or wool blends in a plain or twill weave with a nubby surface; used for jackets, suits, skirts, coats, and upholstery.

22 Trade Publications Magazines, newspapers, books, and websites about what is current in a specific industry. Examples: Women’s Wear Daily (WWD), Visual Merchandising & Store Design (VM & SD)

Fashion magazines, books, and websites that help consumers keep abreast of what is happening in fashion news. Consumer publications are broken down into several categories: males, females, and teenage readers. Examples: Males: GQ, Details, CODE Females: Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Elle, Essence, Glamour, In Style, O Teenagers: Teen, Seventeen, YM, Teen Vogue

Fashion: Styles that are accepted and used by a particular group of people at a given time. Garment: An article of wearing apparel such as a dress, suit, coat, evening gown, or sweater. Style: A design, shape, or type of apparel item distinguished by the particular characteristics that make it unique; basic characteristics or distinguishing features of a garment.

Trend: The direction of movement of public acceptance of color, texture, and silhouette in fashion. Market Week: The scheduled period of time during which producers officially introudce their new lines of merchandise and retail buyers shop the various lines.
