Essential Question: How do I correctly talk about who something or someone belongs to in Spanish using possessive adjectives? Gramática 3.2 Los adjetivos posesivos Possessive Adjectives

What are they? Possessive adjectives express ownership of things and people. Por ejemplo: Es mi dinero. (It’s my money.) Ellos son sus maestros. (Those are his teachers.)

Connecting with Prior Knowledge: Like NUMBERGENDER Like other Spanish adjectives, possessive adjectives always agree in NUMBER and sometimes GENDER with the noun they describe. Ejemplo: las chicas bonitas la chica bonita

Unlike Unlike other Spanish adjectives, however, possessive adjectives go directly before the noun they describe. Es mi gata. (It’s my cat.) Son mis gatas. (They are my cats.)

OJO: Nuestro(a) and Vuestro(a) agree in gender AND number with the nouns they describe! Poss. adjs. come directly before the noun; the use of the article is NOT necessary. Ejemplo: Es mi teléfono. Avoid saying: Es mi el teléfono.

How do I clarify between his/her and their? Use: NOUN + de + PERSON Ejemplo: Es su abuela. OR Es la abuela de Juan. Es la abuela de Anita. Es la abuela de ellos.

Keep in mind! When discussing your family you may also want to use indefinite articles. Por ejemplo: Tengo un hermano. Mi hermano tiene siete años. (I have a brother. My brother is seven years old.) AVOID saying, “Tengo el hermano.”
