1 Los adjetivos posesivos
What’s the POINT? What is the ESSENTIAL QUESTION? How do I correctly express possession in Spanish using possessive adjectives (words like my, his, our, etc.)? Gramática 3.2

2 What are they? Possessive adjectives express ownership of things and people. Por ejemplo: Es mi dinero. (It’s my money.) Ellos son sus maestros. (Those are his teachers.)

3 Connecting with Prior Knowledge:
Like other Spanish adjectives, possessive adjectives always agree in GENDER and sometimes NUMBER with the noun they describe. Ejemplo: las chicas bonitas la mujer bonita

4 Unlike other Spanish adjectives, however, possessive adjectives go directly before the noun they describe. Es mi gata. (It’s my cat.) Son mis gatas. (They are my cats.)

5 SINGULAR POSSESSIVE ADJECTIVES MI - my TU - your (familiar)
SU - your (formal) SU - his/her/its NUESTRO(A) - our VUESTRO(A) - your (plural) SPAIN SU - your (plural) SU - their

6 Fill-in the blank with the appropriate possessive adjective:
PRÁCTICA Fill-in the blank with the appropriate possessive adjective: 1.________ hermano (my) 2. _______ tío (your) 3. _______ tía (your) 4. _______ primo (his) 5. _______ madre (our) 6. _______ abuela (their)

10 Fill-in the blank with the appropriate possessive adjective:
PRÁCTICA Fill-in the blank with the appropriate possessive adjective: 1.__mis___ hermanos (my) 2. __tus___ tíos (your) 3. __tus___ amigos (your) 4. __sus___ primos (his) 5. _nuestros__ padres (our) 6. __su____ abuela (their)**

11 OJO: Nuestro(a) and Vuestro(a) agree in gender AND number with the nouns they describe! Poss. adjs. come directly before the noun; the use of the article is NOT necessary. Ejemplo: Es mi teléfono. Avoid saying: Es mi el teléfono.

12 How do I clarify between his/her and their?
Use: NOUN + de + PERSON Ejemplo: Es su abuela. OR Es la abuela de Juan. Es la abuela de Anita. Es la abuela de ellos. How do I clarify between his/her and their?

13 When discussing your family you may also want to use indefinite articles.
Por ejemplo: Tengo un hermano. Mi hermano tiene siete años. (I have a brother. My brother is seven years old.) AVOID saying, “Tengo el hermano.” Keep in mind!

14 CONTRAST the use of possessive adjectives in Spanish and English.
