Indian in the Cupboard What is better. The book or the movie Indian in the Cupboard What is better? The book or the movie? Presentation of Research Dan Quinn 7AZ 2010

Overview The characters in the story and how they differ between the book and the movie Further similarities and differences Venn diagram Setting Plot Recommendation Sources

BOONE Originally Boone was a toy cowboy owned by Patrick. Boone said he was from Texas in the movie, but in the book he came from Georgia. Boone was 21 – which makes him born in 1861. Boone said that he had been married once. Boone was shot in the chest by an arrow shot by Little Bull/Bear. Boone – image from movie

Little Bull – Little Bear Originally a toy Indian was owned by Omri. In the movie the Indian was called Little Bear and in the Book, Little Bull. Little Bull said he was from the Iroquois tribe but Little Bear in the movie was from the Wolf tribe. Little Bull/Bear was the son of the Chief. Little Bull/Bear said that he had been married. In the movie he also had children that had been killed. Little Bull/Bear was kicked by a horse when Omri was taking him to hunt. The Indian – image from movie

Tommy Tommy was a Doctor who served in World War 2. The character in the book is very similar to the movie. Tommy said he was from Lancashire. Tommy was the son of a Vicar. Tommy said he had lost his brother to a minnenwerfer (a German shell). Tommy was told that he was having a dream when he helped Little Bull and Boone. Tommy – image from movie

Patrick Patrick was a 7 year old boy. Patrick lived with his family – his parents in the book and in the movie, also his Grandmother. Patrick was a collector of plastic toys. Patrick owned Little Bull/Bear and Boone. Patrick brought Boone to life by putting him inside Omri’s cupboard and turning the lock. In the movie, Patrick also went to school with Omri. Omri Omri was a 9 year old boy. The character in the book is very similar to the character in the movie. Omri lived with his family – his parents and his two brothers, Adele and Gillian. Omri was a school boy. Omri owned the cupboard that could bring plastic toys to life. Omri brought Little Bull/Bear to life by putting him inside his cupboard and turning the lock. Omri – image from movie

Indian in the cupboard Movie: Set in America Book: Yapp’s was a Hardware store Aidel lost Rat ball The Indian was Called Little bear Mum gave Omri his helmet Boone wasn’t an Artist Book: Set in England Yapp’s was a deli Aidel lost his shorts The Indian was Called Little bull Aidel gave Omri his helmet Boone was an Artist On his ninth birthday, a boy called Omri, received a cupboard from his big brother. Later he discovers that putting plastic toys inside the cupboard, then locking and unlocking, brings the toys to life.

Setting in the book The book is set in England.

Setting in the movie The movie is set in America.

Compare and contrast book and movie settings The movie was set in America to appeal to the American audience The book was set in England because the writer was English Several other changes had to be made, such as Yapp’s from being a deli (book) to being a hardware store (the movie)

Compare and contrast book and movie plot Omri was mugged in the movie, but not in the book. This added excitement to the movie. In the book, Omri used Boone’s drawings to ‘freak out’ his art teacher as they were so small. This was not in the movie – there was no Art teacher. The relationship between the two boys was different in the book compared to the movie. In the book they were friends on the street corner, in the movie they were friends at school.

Recommendation I believe that the movie be would be the best option because the movie gives the children a much easier understanding of the plot as well as a higher amount of action, engaging them in the story.
