CMPD 434 MULTIMEDIA AUTHORING Chapter 03 Multimedia Authoring Process I

Objective At the end of this chapter, students should be able to: Describe Multimedia Project’s Planning and Management Identify Application basics – static media types, formats and integration Creating Linear Presentations Text Imported graphics Timing

Planning and Costing The Process of Making Multimedia Idea Analysis Pretesting Task Planning Prototype Development Alpha Development Beta Development Delivery

Idea Analysis As you think through your idea, must continually weigh your purpose or goal against the feasibility and cost of production and delivery. Ideas don’t always flesh out. Use whiteboard, notepaper or scratch pads to write down your idea, ultimately you will generate a plan of action that will become road map for production. Who need the project? Is it worthwhile? Do you have the materials at hand to build? Do you have skills? What multimedia element will be best deliver?

Idea management Software Project Management Software dotProject, OpenProj, and GanntProject Outlining Programs Microsoft OneNote, Excel Is useful to arrange ideas, task, work items, employee resources and costs.

Pretesting Define your project goals Work up a prototype of the project on paper, with explanation of how it will work. Help to organize your idea and test it against the real world.

Task Planning There may be many task in multimedia project. Below is few of task: Create Storyboards Design Interface Design Information Containers Assemble Team Build Prototype Conduct user test Revise Design Create Graphic, Animation, Video, Audio Test Functionality

Prototype Development Development prototype only after decided the project is worth doing The point is you have begin the serious work at the computer, building screen mock-ups and human interface of menus and button clicks Also called as proof of concept or feasibility study Might select only a small portion of a large project and get that part working as it would in the final product. During this phase you can test ideas, mock up interface, exercise the hardware platforms.

Prototype Development Test your prototype along several fronts Technology Cost Market Human interface One of the main purpose of any prototype is to test the initial implementation of your idea and improve on it based on the result.

Alpha Development Beta Development Also knows as alpha release, its just a more focused and more people involved compared to the prototype. Select few real users and test your alpha release then provide feedback. Beta Development By this time you have committed serious time, energy and money. So its impossible or too late to bail out. But now your project will look great, more features are working. Distribute to wider arena of tester.

Delivery Producing final product. Now your worries slide towards the marketplace, will it received by audience, will they enjoy the product. How the project is delivered to the user? CD-ROM DVD WEB

Application basics – static media types, formats and integration Multimedia integration model that allows the expression of different facets of multimedia presentation such as: Media, Temporal, Spatial and Link. Media allows to specify the location of media content Spatial allows to specify the layout of each media on screen Temporal allows to specify the temporal presentation of each media Link allows to set hyperlinks on the media, which creates the navigation and interaction scenario of the presentation.

Creating Linear Presentation start at the beginning then each slide is presented one after another in numerical order. A linear presentation is very good for imparting facts and figures such as presenting the annual results of the company or summarizing a finished project. Not always non-linear presentation plays an important role.

Important Features of creating linear presentation Text Add text in Layout “hot spots” Use as few different faces as possible in the same work – vary size and weight of the typeface using italic or bold. Explore effects of different colors and placing text on different backgrounds Use anti-aliased text to get gentle and blended look.

Important Features of creating linear presentation Imported Graphics The graphics need to be high resolution and clear Add appropriate graphics with exact ratio of the original image/graphic Choose colour and theme based on the overall theme Graphics also can be used to deliver the content

Important Features of creating linear presentation Timing Based of number of slides/content and also the total time for presentation If for a video, make sure the timing of content appearing is follow the flow of content
