Using Pro-Engineer to Create 3 Dimensional Shapes Kevin Manner Kevin Manner Tim Reynolds Tim Reynolds Thuy Tran Thuy Tran Vuong Nguyen Vuong Nguyen

Setting Up the Drawing Surface: Start Pro-Engineer and click on the, create a new object, icon located in the upper left hand corner of the tool bar.

The New Menu will come up. For this application click on part in the type column, click on solid in the sub-type column, and put the name of the part, for example “cube,” in the name area. Make sure that the use the default template is checked. The default template automatically sets the units of the drawing to English units and provides a more efficient Drawing Tool bar.

Click OK. This will tell Pro-E to bring up the Datum Planes. Datum Planes (front, top, and bottom) are the 3-dimensional reference planes that the drawing will be done on. The screen should look like this.

To the left of the datum plane screen will be the model tree, which is not necessary for this application. To turn it off click on the Model tree on/off button located near the center of the toolbar.

Creating a 3-Dimensional Square (Cube):Click on in the Menu Manager Box Feature/Create/Solid/Protrusion /Extrude /Solid/Done to start instructing Pro-E on the type of part you are going to draw.

Click on Both Sides/Done in the menu manager when the protrusion text box comes up next. There are certain attributes of your part that you the user must tell Pro-E so that it can successfully create the part. For our cube we need a both sides extrusion.

Click on Set Up New/Plane/Pick in the box then in the blue datum screen left click on the datum plane labeled (yellow square) FRONT when the Select Sketch Plane Box comes up. Now we must tell Pro-E which datum planes we are going to draw on. This surface will be your primary datum plane. Defining this as your main drawing plane will come in handy when choosing the view you want.

Click on Setup/New/Top/Plane/Pick to define a reference plane to which your 2 dimensional drawing surface will be created. Move your mouse into the blue drawing surface and click on the datum plane (yellow square) labeled TOP. Pro-E will automatically move to the black, 2 dimensional drawing surface shown below (Fig. 10)

A References box will pop up (figure). This box allows you to add other reference to your 2-Dimensional drawing plane. However this step is not necessary, so Click on Close to remove it from the desktop. This feature is most handy when adding features, such as a cut or a protrusion, to an existing part, in which you may choose the edge of the part as a reference.

Go to the tool bar to the right of the drawing screen and select the create lines button to begin the cube. This will bring up the line cursor. Move the cursor to the vertical center axis. It will automatically align to that axis. You will know that the cursor is aligned when it is circled in red

Left click to start drawing the line segment. The length of the line does not matter as you will be able to dimension the cube later. Draw the line out about half way then left click again. This will be start of a new line. Draw the next line down to the horizontal axis and left click again. Draw two more lines in a similar fashion to complete the square.

Middle click to stop drawing when the square is complete. Pro-E will automatically dimension the lines that you have drawn. You can set any dimension you like but for our purposes we will set each side to 10. Go to the tool bar and select modify the value of dimensions button

Left click on the value when the modify values text box comes up. type in 10 and click the green check. Modify the other value and your square should look like the figure on the next slide.

Go to the tool bar and select the continue with the current selection button. Left click on it to bring up the menu manager. We will be doing a blind protrusion so left click on blind protrusion and left click

Type 10 in the enter depth message text window located in the upper left hand corner then left click the accept value green check. Left click on OK in the protrusion text box. The cube is now complete and the screen should look like the following slide if the procedure was followed correctly.
