PLANT AND ANIMAL CELL WHAT IN THE WORLD DO ALL THESE PARTS DO?

CELL MEMBRANE This is a thin layer of protein and fat surrounding a cell. It allows some substances to pass into the cell while keeping others out.

CELL WALL This rigid layer surrounds a plant cell and gives it its shape. Its main purpose is to protect the cell from any possible damages.

CHLOROPLAST This structure absorbs sunlight which the plant combines with water and carbon dioxide to produce its own food.

CYTOPLASM This is the jelly-like fluid inside a cell where the organelles are located.

ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM Also known as the ER, this is a system of interconnected sacs or tubes that transport material through the cell.

GOLGI APPARATUS Also known as the Golgi body, this is a layered structure of flattened membrane bound sacs. Its job is to process proteins from the ribosomes.

LYSOSOMES This is a round structure that digests nutrients. Lysosomes are more common in animal cells than in plant cells.

MITOCHONDRIA These are the power plants of the cell. Mitochondria take in nutrients and break them down to create energy for the cell

NUCLEUS This acts like the brain of the cell. It controls eating, movement, and reproduction. Inside the nucleus is the nucleolus, which helps in the formation of ribosomes.

RIBOSOMES These build proteins by connecting single amino acids into long chains. There are two kinds of ribosomes- free ribosomes that float in the cytoplasm, and ribosomes that are attached to the ER.

VACUOLE This is a fluid filled cavity inside a cell. Plant cells often have one large vacuole compared with smaller ones that are usually found in animal cells. When the vacuole is full of food and waste material, the plant stands firm. When the vacuole loses fluid, the plant becomes wilted.
