Practice 2: Symbolic Analysis Directions: please find one longer significant quote from chapter 11 or 12 where something is symbolized. Write it where the handout says, “Quote.” Example MLA Format for Narration: “Roger advanced upon them as one wielding a nameless authority”(Golding 182). Example MLA when Character is Speaking: “‘Heave! Heave! Heave!’” (Golding 193).
Practice 2: Symbolic Analysis Example of ONE longer, significant symbolism quote: “The rock struck Piggy a glancing blow from chin to knee; the conch exploded into a thousand white fragments and ceased to exist…. Piggy fell forty feet and landed on his back across the square red rock in the sea …. The water boiled white and pink over the rock; and when it went, … the body of Piggy was gone” (Golding 181).
Practice 2: Symbolic Analysis Directions for Quote: 1. Break your quote into three separate but significant parts. 2. Place bracket each chunk, then number the chunks from 1-3. For example: “The [ rock struck Piggy a glancing blow ] from chin to knee; the conch [ exploded into a thousand white fragments and ceased to exist ] …. Piggy fell forty feet and landed on his back across the square red rock in the sea …. The water boiled white and pink over the rock; and when it went, … [ the body of Piggy was gone ] ” (Golding 181)
Step-by-Step Guide for HOW 1. Introduce speaker Jack claims, 2. Cite 1 st chunk of quote “‘we’ll raid them and take their fire,’” 3. Say what it symbolizes and if the signal fire symbolizes hope, then it could mean they are going to take some of Ralph’s group’s hope away 4. Use the word “because” to explain how because keeping the signal fire lit keeps up the boys’ hope of being saved. 5. Do this 3 times (1 st Chunk of quote, analysis. 2 nd Chunk of quote, analysis. 3 rd Chunk of quote, analysis.) 6. Restate why the object symbolizes what it symbolizes in 1-2 sentences.
