1 Lord of the Flies Chapters 7-9

2 Turn in Vocabulary 2

3 Shadows and Tall Trees Ralph begins to notice his lack of cleanliness
How does this relate to the characters and themes we have been discussing? For what does Ralph wish? “Then gradually the almost infinite size of this water forced itself on his attention” (Golding 111). The boys have been living on the good side of the island with berries and a lagoon, but they’ve started wanting to explore the other side of the island. What does this say about the boys?

4 Ralph and the Fall of Man
The Boar The Beast While returning home the boys are rushed by a boar – Ralph is the one to stick the boar with a spear. Ralph sees the overall value of hunting and does not hesitate. Does this equate him with Jack? Once a human, now appears to be “something like a great ape” (123). “Holding toward them the ruin of a face” (123). What is the importance of the decaying body of the man on the mountain?

5 The Conch Jack blows the conch to call a meeting
Jack and Ralph argue over who will talk One is chief, but one blew the all powerful conch Why does Jack win the argument?

6 New Jack City Jack and the New Tribe Transformation Complete
Rule time for the man who says bollocks to the rules He will be chief, they will hunt Forget the beast Will hold a feast after their next kill to sway others to join Will leave a tribute of meat for the beast “He was happy and wore the damp darkness of the forest like his old clothes” (133-4). Jack has finally become a part of the jungle Civilized society holds no bearing in his mind “He saw that the tallest of them, stark naked save for paint and a belt, was Jack” (140).

7 The Hunt – The Kill – The Tribute
Page 135 – Lust for the kill, Jack feels the life leave the animal “Then Jack grabbed Maurice and rubbed the stuff over his cheeks” (135). Jack has ‘inducted’ more members with the blood of another kill The boys are amused by the placement of the spear The boars head is left on a spear in the middle of the jungle as a tribute to the beast (an attempt to stay safe)

8 Journal 3: Simon & the Lord of the Flies
Simon watched the kill and the rituals of the hunters that followed The Lord of the Flies speaks to Simon Simon knew this would happen LotF claims he is a part of him Says that they are going to have some fun Tells Simon that he is unwanted because he is too proper/good Why is Simon the one that speaks with the Lord of the Flies? How does this fit into the symbolism behind his character?

9 Power of the Leaders Jack Ralph
“‘Go on—now!’ The two savages murmured. Jack spoke sharply. ‘Go on!’ The two savages looked at each other, raised their spears together and spoke in time. ‘The Chief has spoken.’” Ralph “The group of boys looked at the white shell with affectionate respect. Piggy placed it in Ralph’s hand and the littleuns, seeing the familiar symbol, started to come back” (141). What has happened to the leaders of this island? Who holds true power?

10 Absence of Truth “On the mountain-top the parachute filled and moved; the figure slid…The parachute took the figure forward, furrowing the lagoon, and bumped it over the reef and out to sea” (153). Simon’s message will never come to fruition The reality of the situation will never be known The boys will never know the truth behind the beast’s identity (Simon died trying to tell them it was a part of them all)

11 Charts and Timelines Questions/Ideas Themes Hope of rescue
Which of our themes does the reenactment of the hunt fall under and how? What is Ralph’s true fear on the island? How about Jack? “Ashes blew into Ralph’s face from the dead fire. He could not see the gap or anything” (123). Are any of the boys innocent? What is this quote saying? Why don’t the boys want to join Jack when he asks for followers? How does Jack’s departure change Piggy? What does the rain from the storm in chapter 9 symbolize? How did Simon’s conversation with the LotF affect him? How has Simon’s character evolved? Is Piggy gaining more power or is he still the butt of the joke? Why will no one question Jack’s authority? What does that say about him? Why do the boys do their ritualistic dance? What symbols can you find in Simon’s death? Hope of rescue Civilization Identity Dependence Power Leadership Loss of Innocence Conch Rules Fear
