Take out your copy of Lord of the Flies by William Golding.
Turn to pg Today we will be finishing the novel!

2. Lord of the Flies Chapter 12: Pgs. 165-169
Ralph is in the forest hiding from the boys. He examines his wounds, wishing he could wash them off in the lagoon; however, he has accepted that he must wait to do this. He is worried that the hunters will come and look for him again.
While in the forest, Ralph spots Bill and realizes that this is not the same boy he knew, but “a savage whose image refused to blend with that ancient picture of a boy in shorts an shirt” (165).
Once Ralph feels secure enough to leave his hiding place, he smells a burning fire and fresh meat. He is reminded of how hungry he is and resents the boys for their abundant food. Ralph finds himself in the clearing, eating fruit from the trees. He sees the pig’s rotted head on a stick and a white skull. The white skull reminds him of the pure white conch. He smashes the skull into pieces, just like the conch was smashed.
Ralph, overcome by exhaustion, attempts to fall asleep in the clearing, but he can’t seem to relax. He finally admits to himself that he is an outcast because he “had some sense” (168).
In the distance, Ralph hears the hunters’ familiar chant. When he looks up at Castle Rock he notices that the guard has changed from Roger to Sam-n-Eric. Ralph knows he has to be cautious of the twins since they are now a part of Jack’s tribe.
Ralph calls to Sam-n-Eric in the dead of night . The boys are apprehensive to speak to him. They are warned they will get beaten or that the tribute will come out and attack Ralph. 2

4. Lord of the Flies Chapter 12: Pgs. 172-175
Hearing voices emerge from Castle Rock, Ralph hides once more, this time savoring the meat Sam-n-Eric gave him.
Ralph finds a hiding place and can no longer avoid sleep. He promises himself to wake up at the first light in order to spare his life.
Ralph wakes to the sound of a hunt. This time he knows they are hunting him, not a pig. He crawls his way into a thicket of fern, feeling satisfied at his hiding place. Before he can relish in this security, he hears Jack and Roger’s voices close by.
Outside of his hiding place, commotion continues. Ralph is only able to rely on his hearing - he can make out whispering, laughing, and cries of pain. 4

5. Lord of the Flies Chapter 12: Pgs. 175-176

6. Lord of the Flies Chapter 12: Pgs. 177-179
Ralph continues to run through the forest trying to stop and points to catch his breath and think through his next steps. He remembers that Sam-n-Eric are among the hunters and hopes that they are hating this as much as he is.
Ralph tries to think about his options, but draws a blank when he realizes the terrible truth - “There was no Piggy to talk sense. There was no solemn assembly for debate nor dignity of the conch” (177).
The fire continues to grow stronger and stronger, forcing Ralph out of the forest and on to the beach. He is fully exposed now, making it easier for the hunters to find him.
Ralph attempts to find an appropriate hiding place, but not before long he is staring into the eyes of one of the savages. 6
