Agenda: Distribute Ch 5 Comprehension and Discussion Questions Distribute Symbolism and Character Handouts Finish Reading Chapter 5 H/W: Finish reading chapter 5 at home if you did not have time to finish in class. Next Survivor Challenge: Pig Trap Due Wednesday, 11/20 for 1st and 3rd, and Thursday, 11/21 for 2nd period.

2 Characters as Symbols Handout
At the top and center of the back side, please write “Jack as Savage” Directions: Find passages in the text that make it clear that Golding intends for us to see Jack as a symbol of savagery. Look for similes, personification, metaphors, and diction (word choice) that describe or develop Jack’s savagery. Remember! Jack symbolizes humans’ instinct to: gratify immediate desires, act violently to obtain supremacy over others, and enforce one’s will.

3 Learning Targets: I can identify and cite evidence to support that Ralph symbolizes civilization. I can identify and cite evidence to support that Jack symbolizes savagery. I can infer what Piggy standing outside of the assembly signifies. I can identify who encourages Ralph to keep his position as chief and why the character encourages him.
