Question #1

Question #2

Challenges for Researchers Publication Dates of Articles Covered Types of Articles Covered Publisher Submissions vs. Author Submissions Complicated Submission Process Knowing the Numbers… NIHMS # vs. PMCID# Rejection of Progress Reports Publisher Permission Refusal PMID: PMCID: PMC

How to Get Involved  Know the Policy & Submission Methods  Be Aware of Publishing Roadblocks  Get a PACM Role Designation  Learn the System  Fact Sheet Compiled  Presentations & Newsletter Articles  Building Contact Points in Departments  Customized Reports

Methods for Manuscript Submission A – Author publishes an article in an open access journal (auto deposit) B - Author requests that the publisher deposit article in PMC (fee-based) C - Author or designee deposits via NIHMSS D - Publisher deposits article in NIHMSS & author must approve/complete the process.

Submission Process - Authors

Clarifications from NIH If journal is embargoed, can it still go in MSS? What to do about researchers no longer at institution? If publisher auto-submits, will PMC ID number be automatically sent to PI? Do articles have to be indexed in MEDLINE to be accepted in PMC?

PACM System

Helping Your Researchers What Can You Do? Provide customized reports on compliance Provide them with form letter (for publishers) customized for your institution Provide presentations in their units / depts. Encourage them to start the conversation w/ subgrant awardees

Important Tips Authors must retain right to submit to PMC when signing copyright agreement Authors should start submission process upon acceptance for publication 3 months after publication date – shows up on non- compliant list Embargo date can be set by author
