Write Three Wishes Write down this heading in your notebook: Imagine that you found a magic lamp with a genie inside who would grant you three wishes. What would you wish for? (Wishing for more wishes isn’t allowed!) Now, what if the genie told you that the last person whose wishes were granted wished for death? Would you still make your wishes? Why or why not?

Before reading “The Monkey’s Paw” was published in 1902 and takes place in London around the turn of the century. One of the main characters in the story is a sergeant who has returned from a tour of duty in India. India became a colony of England in the mid- 1800s and did not gain independence until 1947. During this time, it was common for British soldiers to serve in India.

Before reading While serving in India, the sergeant acquired a mysterious object that a fakir placed a spell upon. A fakir is wandering Hindu holy person who performs feats of magic and sells charms.
