3 Are you superstitious? In your notebook, brainstorm a list of common superstitions. What kinds of superstitious behaviors do you or people you know believe in? Think about which ones are harmless, and which might cause problems or interfere with someone’s life.

5 Everyone has a lucky something… Good Luck Charms Talisman : an object, typically an inscribed ring or stone, that is thought to have magic powers and/or to bring good luck.

6 Background Information Story was first published in England in 1902. Gothic/Supernatural/horror short story. Recognizable elements of horror genre.

7 Elements of horror fiction: Plot devices that cannot be explained rationally or through scientific means (magic). Usually rely on mystery and suspense to enhance the plot. High emotions; women in distress. Structures of three Setting at a homestead or castle; significance of windows and doors.

8 Fate or coincidence? What experiences in your life lead you to believe that fate or coincidence control your destiny? Do you think that the events in your life happen at random or on purpose?

9 Part I What is the setting of the story? Time Place Mood Who is the family’s visitor, and where did he recently return from? What is a fakir? What did the fakir want the paw to show people? What happened to the first owner of the paw?

10 Part I Why does Sergeant-Major Morris throw the paw in the fire? What does Mr. White wish for? What happens when Mr. White makes his wish?

11 Part II What has happened to Herbert? What is ironic about the compensation the family receives?

12 Part III How far away is the cemetery from the house? What is Mr. White’s second wish? Why is he reluctant to make his wish? Why is there a large lapse in time between when the wish is made and the knock at the door? What is Mr. White’s third wish? Infer!
