 Apply 3 principles of personal branding to your career  Learn 15 tips to remain competitive in the workplace  Enhance visibility and brand value for yourself as a professional and leader

1. Are in demand and have better chances for promotion or getting clients 2. Command loyalty 3. Have the power to change perception and influence others 4. Are seen to contribute relevant value to the people they serve 5. Get paid more 6. Enjoy what they do at work

1. Use a Balanced Scorecard 2. Find your own personal career path 3. Performance AND Perception matter

Financial Reward “I get paid well.” Fun and Enjoyment “I love and enjoy what I do. I use my talents and strengths.” Recognition, Quality of People “I like the people I work with and for, I feel appreciated at work.” Impact, significance, meaning “I support a cause and work for something I believe in.”

Discuss with a colleague: 1. What makes a person authentic? (describe a person that is authentic) 2. How do you know a person is authentic?

 What really matters is what other people believe and perceive what you can do for them.

We judge ourselves on our intentions. We judge others on their behaviors. I think I am…  driven, determined and goal-oriented  Smart, intelligent and confident  Humorous, fun Others see me …  Impatient, stubborn and aggressive  Arrogant, “know-it-all”  Sarcastic, cynical

Build Brand Value in Three Areas: A. Focus on your strengths B. Enhance your visibility and exposure C. Become an expert in your field

A. Focus on your strengths 1. Look at your personal assets beyond your credentials: Knowledge, personality traits, interests, enthusiasm, etc. 2. Write down 3 core strengths: Describe a situation when you exhibited the strength & create a story 3. Take a personal assessment to learn more about yourself (e.g. DISC, MBTI, Hogan) 4. Get feedback: ask 10 people “what strengths do you see in me?” 5. Teach others what you are good at

B. Enhance your visibility and exposure 6. Network, network, network (become interested in others) 7. Join professional associations (CFA, Alumni) and get actively involved 8. Volunteer for organizations to demonstrate your strengths and expertise 9. Write a powerful 1-page bio, describing your accomplishments 10. Use Social Media tools to stay connected (LinkedIN)

Networking is a process of with others to exchange  Information,  Advice and  Contacts. “The name of the game in life and in networking is what you can do for others.” -- Harvey Mackay

1. Be open-minded. Networking is a dynamic process. 2. Approach others with confidence. 3. Ask relevant, substantive questions. 4. Become genuinely interested in other people; Listen and learn. 5. Give without expectations. Show appreciation. 6. Practice the skills

C. Become an expert in your field 11. Learn about topics you are excited and passionate about (read, attend seminar, learn from other experts) 12. Write about your expertise 13. Speak about your expertise; learn to present with impact and assertiveness 14. Get a mentor or coach 15. Establish a mastermind or learning group

Credibility is the foundation of personal branding and effective leadership. If you don’t believe in the messenger, you won’t believe the message. Leaders don’t get appointed. It’s earned through behaviors. Source: Kouzes/Posner, The Leadership Challenge

Ineffective Behaviors Effective Behaviors 1. Lack of clarity & direction 2. Disorganization 3. Disengaged, not really listening 4. Not communicate clearly/concisely 5. Over-commitment 1. Set goals, plan, strategize 2. Manage time / energy 3. Listen with empathy 4. Be assertive and articulate 5. Holding self and others accountable

A. What do you want to change? B. Why do you want to change? (what benefits will you get from changing the behavior?)

 Try Feedforward instead of Feedback  Apply Three Rules 1.Listen without judgment 2.Take notes 3. The only response is “Thank you”

1. Commitment and willingness to change 2. Interaction and support from co-workers 3. Follow up, follow up, follow up What does it take to achieve a positive, lasting change in behavior?
