Book Report By Mrs. Hilton Rodzina By Karen Cushman Book Report By Mrs. Hilton

The Setting Rodzina takes place in the United States of America in 1881. It begins in Chicago with Rodzina and other orphans boarding the train. The train then travels across the United States making several different stops. The book finally ends in California.

Rodzina She was a polish orphan, who lost her family to sickness. She is 12 years old. She was the oldest girl on the train and was put in charge of the older kids. Lacy becomes like an annoying little sister to her (but she loves her) She is afraid of being adopted and turned into a slave or worse not adopted at all. She thinks of herself as homely and a big girl for her age.

Miss Doctor She is in charge of all of the orphans on the train. She is a doctor, and one of only a few women doctors of her time. She puts Rodzina in charge of the older orphans and takes care of the littler ones. She travels with Rodzina through out her journey and end up coming to really care for Rodzina.

Lacy She is young 8 year old girl who is an orphan. Off all the other Orphans she likes Rodzina the best She doesn’t try to hid who she is and is not shy! She was once told she was a little “slow” and now tells everyone. She wants to be adopted by a family who will love her.

The Story Rodzina and other orphaned children, including some she knew while living on the street board a train heading west from Chicago. Rodzina does not want to make friends but she does not want to make enemies. Miss Doctor puts her in charge of the older kids. Rodzina feels like this is a good job for her. During the ride Rodzina meets Lacy, and she annoys her! She thinks that Lacy will probably be hard to adopt.

The Story There is also a man from the orphanage. He helps Miss Doctor with the Orphans. He makes sure that they all have sandwiches to eat. He is the one in charge of finding new parents for the orphans when the train makes stops. At the first stop two elderly ladies try to adopt Rodzina. As they are taking her home she hears them talking about how they will make her work. She lies and tells them that she is all kinds of bad. They take her back and she gets back on the train. At the first stop lots of the little ones have been adopted and only a few of the older ones.

READ RODZINA TO FIND OUT!! What will happen??? Will Rodzina find a home? Will the the others find homes? Will the people that they are adopted to make them slaves? READ RODZINA TO FIND OUT!!
