Woodstock

* Full name of the event was the Woodstock Music & Art Festival * Originally supposed to be from Aug but went into the morning of Aug acts performed before an estimated 400,000 people * Widely considered to be one of the most important events of the counter culture generation & rock n’ roll history

* Tickets were $18 in advance and $24 at the gate. That’s the equivalent of $110/$150 today. * The festival was held on dairy farmers Max Yasgur’s land just outside of Bethel, New York.Max Yasgur’s

* 186,000 advance tickets were sold, concert promoters estimated 200,000 would attend * They could either improve the fencing & security or spend the remainder of their money on completing the stage (and therefore losing money) * The concert promoters dilemma was answered for them the day before the concert. A LOT of people showed up A LOT earlier than anticipated…the fences were cut down and it was now a free concert

* There was a 20 mile traffic jam to the Woodstock. People left their cars on the side of the road for three days and walked to the festival * The state police were almost called in and Army helicopters helped fly performing artists into the staging area

* At the end of the first day came the rains! * There were not enough bathrooms (port-a-potties), food or medical facilities. The city of Bethel decided to not enforce their traffic/parking laws

* Day 1 were mostly folk rock singers like Arlo Guthrie & Joan Baez (who performedJoan Baez at 1 am!) * Day 2 - Acid/Psychadelic Rock artists such as Carlos Santana, Grateful Dead, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Janis Joplin, The Who, Jefferson AirplaneCarlos SantanaThe Who

* Day 3 started at 2 pm with Joe CockerJoe Cocker, Blood Sweat & Tears, Crosby Stills Nash & Young, Sha Na Na & Jimi HendrixSha Na Na

* Other groups invited to perform included The Beatles, Bob Dylan (who was living about 20 miles away), The Doors (cancelled at the last minute), Led Zepplin & Chicago * The following year Max Yasgur kindly declined to host the festival again saying, “as far as I’m concerned, I’m going back to farming.” * The Bethel town supervisor was fired for allowing the festival to happen and local towns passed laws to prohibit large gatherings such as this from happening again.
