5 Summer of Love (1967) As many as 100,000 people flocked to San Francisco, creating a cultural and political rebellion. It became a melting pot of music, psychoactive drugs, sexual freedom, creative expression, and politics. Hippies began to practice communal living and free love The Summer of Love was when the counterculture movement really came into public awareness, and set the tone for years to come

6 Communes Hippie communities in which the members shared everything equally, rejecting the typical living arrangements and expectations of mainstream American society This included open relationships/free love People in communes tried to live simply, growing their own food where possible Communes were often founded for religious/spiritual reasons For some it was a very rewarding experience, and several communes are still in existence today Others found themselves feeling jealous over sharing people they cared about, or tired of others mooching their stuff. They became disenchanted with the commune and left it behind.

8 Woodstock (1969) The definitive music festival of the era
Took place on a dairy farm in New York from August 15 to August 18, 1969. During the sometimes rainy weekend, thirty-two acts performed outdoors in front of 500,000 concert-goers Jimi Hendrix performed the national anthem

9 What positive things came from the counter-culture?
Challenged inequality (based on race & gender) Challenged materialism, the pressure to conform, and the abuse of authority. Promoted environmental responsibility, tolerance of different people, and working at something you enjoy (not just working for a paycheck)

10 What negative things resulted because of the counter-culture?
Increased illegitimacy, promiscuity, and divorce Addictions and overdoses leading to early deaths “Freedom” without responsibility Unrealistic expectations about life Lack of respect for legitimate authorities Obsession with youth
