2 On August 15, 1969 right outside of White Lake, New York, Woodstock drew thousands of people that believed in peace, love, and music. The hippie movement that came into play in the 1960’s is what drove Woodstock. Legendary performances by such music icons as Jimi Hendrix, Joan Baez, Joe Cocker, Santana, the Grateful Dead and Janis Joplin.

6 The Woodstock Legacy What we can take away from Woodstock is that the '60s had been a rough decade, proven by three assassinations of the two Kennedy brothers and Martin Luther King, many killed in the Viet Nam war and a civil rights battle led by riots and other violence. This peaceful gathering proved that through tough times and hardships, the people of America can come together for a celebration of peace, love, and music.
