Presentation transcript:

 Playable area is typically 100 meters long, with lines at least marking 22, 10, and 50 meters  These lines define where kickoff and penalties occur  Fields can vary in size, ‘not more than or less than’ certain amounts › Typical regulation size is 100 meters long and 70 wide, with a try zone (touch down zone) 22 meters with all the displayed lines marked

 At kickoff, the ball must begin at the 50m and go at least to the 10m line › If not, the receiving team can choose to play the ball or request a re-kick or scrum  The 5 and 15 meter lines running perpendicular to the field represents where a line out forms when the ball goes out of play  The parallel 5 and 22m markings display where penalties occur (kicking and scrums)

 Occurs when the ball goes out of touch (out of bounds)  The ball is awarded to the opposite team of the infraction  Both teams line up on the 5 meter line to jump for the ball, similar to a jump ball in basketball, but one player is lifted by two teammates to attempt to grab the thrown in ball.

 Restarts play after a minor penalty  Includes knock-ons, held up balls in the try zone, and kick-offs going short of 10 meters  8 players on each team bind together to compete for possession of the ball

 The ball must not be passed forward › It can be passed backwards or laterally  The ball can be kicked forward › A chip kick is an offensive kick where a player moves the ball forward for a teammate to catch while on the run  To score, a player must touch down the ball in the try zone (5 points) › A try is not scored if the ball is dropped down or held up by an opposing player  After a try has been scored, any player may kick for conversion points (3 points)

 Only the offensive player with the ball can be tackled, other contact is prohibited  Tackles must be below the shoulder, preferably at the waist

 Rugby referee may also be called a sir  Only one sir calls a game, who signals and calls out penalties  View the QR code below to see examples as well as read up on the rules of the game!
