5 Copyright 2003 Dallas Area When rugby first started the rules and regulations were a little different. There was no limit on how many players could be on the field at a time. Change in point system No running with the ball towards the opposition’ s goal. Size of the ball

6 Copyright 2003 Dallas Area Object of the Game There are four different ways to score points Try- the player is awarded five points Conversion- possible two points after try Penalties and Drop kicks- player is awarded three points

7 Copyright 2003 Dallas Area Rugby Lingo Try- when a player touches the ball down past the goal line and is awarded five points Pitch- the playing field Scrum- a locked position formed by the forwards in order to gain possession of the ball Ruck- formed when players lock themselves over a ball and push in order to gain possession Place kick- when the ball is set in the ground or on a tee and the player kicks it with an attempt for a conversion Maul- formed when a player is bound on by his teammates in attempt to drive the ball Touch- out of bounds Line Out- when a ball goes out of bounds the props lift the jumper to try and gain possession of the ball, which is thrown by the hooker.props jumper hooker Drop kick- when a player drops the ball on the ground and then kicks it with an attempt for a conversion

9 Copyright 2003 Dallas Area Rugby Commandments Thou shalt not throw the ball forward. Thou must touch the ball down to score. Thou shalt not attempt to make a play on the ground When tackled thou must release the ball. Thou shalt not leave one’s feet. Thou shalt not talk back to the referee

10 Copyright 2003 Dallas Area Penalties Knock-on- scrum awarded to opposing team Off-side- penalty awarded to opposing team Sin-bin- between the opponent’s goal posts Foul play- penalty awarded to the opposing team, if it continues player is thrown in the sin-bin Not back ten- another penalty is awarded to the opposing team
