CHAPTER FOUR THE ROAD TO INDEPENDENCE

VOCABULARY ACT: A law COMMITTEE: A group of people chosen to do certain work DECLARATION: A public statement. DELEGATE: Chosen spokesperson. DUTY: A tax on goods brought in from a foreign country. HOSTILE: Hateful, angry. LOYAL: Faithful to someone or something..

VOCABULARY PROTEST: Speak out or act against. REPEAL: Cancel, put an end to. STATESMAN: A person who is good at handling government business. TAX: Money people must pay to support a government. UNITED: Joined together

Colonists Look for New Land English colonies grew fast. The English colonists wanted to now move west of the Appalachian Mountains. The land west of the Appalachian Mountains was know as the Ohio Valley. France already claimed the Ohio Valley. The French explored this land and made friends with the Native Americans.

The French and Indian War The war was over which nation should control the Ohio Valley. France England In 1754 the French and Indian war started. The French received a lot of help from the Native Americans. British soldiers dressed in bright red uniforms. The French and Natives fought in a quieter style. They used surprise attacks. England took control of all the land east of the Mississippi River and Canada.

Victory for England Brings New Problems England won the war and that created new problems for the French and Natives. King George III of England passed a law saying that no colonists could settle in the Ohio Valley. The British said they couldn’t do this because they were unable to protect them against the Natives. They really didn’t want them moving out of British control.

Victory for England Brings New Problems They prevented western travel because the colonists would no longer send England money for goods. The British began to make new acts and taxes on certain products. The new acts seemed unfair to the colonists.

British Acts ACTYEARWhat the act did SUGAR ACT1764Taxed items like sugar and molasses that were brought in from other countries other then England. QUARTERING ACT1765Forced colonists to provide” quarters” for the British soldiers. Quarters are a place to east and sleep. STAMP ACT1765Taxed newspapers, playing cards, and official documents. The colonists had buy special stamps to place on such items. TOWNSHEND ACTS1767The colonists had to pay duty on tea, paper, lead, and paint. These acts were named after the English Minister of Finance.
