Exercise and the body systems

Outcomes By the end of this lesson, you will be able to: Identify the 8 body systems. Match the correct definition to the correct system. Understand the interrelationships and their contribution to performance.

Body Systems What are they? You have 8 body systems in your body. Each of these work together to make your body operate. When you take part in sport, it is not just a case of moving your arms and legs. All the body systems work together.

Your skeletal system Bones and joints. Without bones you would be a shapeless heap.

Your muscular system Is made up of muscles. Red meat around your body. The pull on boned and make them move.

Your circulatory system Blood, heart and blood vessels. Blood carries food and oxygen round the body and carries waste products away.

Your respiratory system The lungs and breathing tube. This is how you take in oxygen and get rid of carbon dioxide.

Your nervous system The brain, spinal cord and network of nerves. This controls and coordinates movment.

Your hormonal system A set of glands which make hormones. These chemicals help control activities going on in the body.

Your digestive system The stomach and gut. This is where the food you eat gets broken down. You use digested food as uel.

Your excretory system The lungs, kidneys and intestine. These get rid or or excrete waste products from your body.

Body Systems TASK Your teacher will give you a body system to look at. Using PE to16, draw around one of your friends and include a life size body system. Label your diagram and be prepared to present a short paragraph about your life size body system.

Working together How do body systems work together? Just as a car has an ignition system, a break system, and a cooling system for the car to start, So does our bodies.

Homework Using the given worksheet. Rearrange the order of how the body systems work together to create an accurate diagram.
