Human Tissues Noadswood Science, 2012

Human Tissues To be able to identify, describe and explain the role of human tissues, organs and organ systems To be able to identify, describe and explain the role of human tissues, organs and organ systems Saturday, September 19, 2015Saturday, September 19, 2015Saturday, September 19, 2015Saturday, September 19, 2015

Organs What is an organ? What is an organ? Where do we find organs? Where do we find organs? Can you name all the organs found in the human body (do you know where they are located in the body)? Can you name all the organs found in the human body (do you know where they are located in the body)?

Organs A group of similar cells is called a tissue A group of similar cells is called a tissue A group of different tissues is called an organ A group of different tissues is called an organ An organ is made from a group of different tissues, which all work together to do a particular job An organ is made from a group of different tissues, which all work together to do a particular job Both animals and plants have organs, e.g. Both animals and plants have organs, e.g. Heart Heart Lung Lung Stomach Stomach Brain Brain Kidney Kidney Liver Liver

Organs Each organ has a very specific job to do. The organs in the human body do the following: - Each organ has a very specific job to do. The organs in the human body do the following: - Brain – controls our whole body Brain – controls our whole body Liver – detoxification for the body (cleans it out) Liver – detoxification for the body (cleans it out) Kidneys – waste filtration (remove urea and help adjust water content in blood) Kidneys – waste filtration (remove urea and help adjust water content in blood) Bladder – collects waste material and stores it, until it is full enough to be emptied through the urethra Bladder – collects waste material and stores it, until it is full enough to be emptied through the urethra Heart – pumps blood throughout the body Heart – pumps blood throughout the body Lungs – transport oxygen into the body, and carbon dioxide out from the body Lungs – transport oxygen into the body, and carbon dioxide out from the body Gut – digests food (absorbing the energy and nutrients from it) Gut – digests food (absorbing the energy and nutrients from it)

Organ Systems Organs can work together to perform specific jobs – these are called organ systems Organs can work together to perform specific jobs – these are called organ systems Circulatory system (heart; blood vessels; blood) Circulatory system (heart; blood vessels; blood) Respiratory system (lungs; trachea) Respiratory system (lungs; trachea) Digestive system (mouth; stomach; intestines; liver; anus) Digestive system (mouth; stomach; intestines; liver; anus) Nervous system (brain; spinal cord; nerves) Nervous system (brain; spinal cord; nerves) Excretory system (kidneys; urinary bladder; urethra) Excretory system (kidneys; urinary bladder; urethra) Reproductive system (ovaries; testes) Reproductive system (ovaries; testes) Muscular system (skeletal muscles) Muscular system (skeletal muscles) Leaf canopy Leaf canopy Root system Root system Flower Flower

Body Have a look at the worksheet of the human skeleton Have a look at the worksheet of the human skeleton Stick this sheet in, and then using the other sheet cut out the different organs and stick the tab of these organs onto your skeleton Stick this sheet in, and then using the other sheet cut out the different organs and stick the tab of these organs onto your skeleton Finally, answer the questions on the sheet Finally, answer the questions on the sheet

Organ Function Brain – controls our whole body Brain – controls our whole body Liver – detoxification for the body (cleans it out) Liver – detoxification for the body (cleans it out) Kidneys – waste filtration (remove urea and help adjust water content in blood) Kidneys – waste filtration (remove urea and help adjust water content in blood) Bladder – collects waste material and stores it, until it is full enough to be emptied through the urethra Bladder – collects waste material and stores it, until it is full enough to be emptied through the urethra Heart – pumps blood throughout the body Heart – pumps blood throughout the body Lungs – transport oxygen into the body, and carbon dioxide out from the body Lungs – transport oxygen into the body, and carbon dioxide out from the body Gut – digests food (absorbing the energy and nutrients from it) Gut – digests food (absorbing the energy and nutrients from it) Blood system: heart Blood system: heart Breathing system: lungs Breathing system: lungs Urinary (cleaning) system: bladder; kidneys Urinary (cleaning) system: bladder; kidneys Digestive system: gut; liver Digestive system: gut; liver

Summary Large multicellular organisms are made up of organ systems Large multicellular organisms are made up of organ systems Similar cells are organised into tissues – a group of similar cells that work together to carry out a particular function Similar cells are organised into tissues – a group of similar cells that work together to carry out a particular function Tissues are organised into organs performing a certain function Tissues are organised into organs performing a certain function Organs are organised into organ systems Organs are organised into organ systems
