HUMAN BODY SYSTEMS Flashcards & Fast Facts

2 The basic building blocks of life
Cells

3 This system is responsible for breaking down your food so that the other systems can use its nutrients digestive major organs: stomach, small intestines, large intestines

4 Digestive System * The small intestine is feet long when it is stretched out!!! * Breaks down the food that we eat and turns it into energy

5 This system gives shape and strength to the rest of the body and helps it move around
muscular major organs: biceps, triceps, pectorals

6 Muscular System  Gives shape and strength to the rest of the body and helps it move around  Works closely with the skeletal system  We have 650 muscles in our body!!

7 This system sends messages to the rest of the body and controls the body’s activities
nervous major organs: brain, spinal cord, nerves

8 Nervous System  Sends messages to the rest of the body and controls the body’s activities  The spinal cord is protected by the spine.

9 This system transports nutrients, oxygen, and other materials to the entire body
circulatory major organs: heart, veins, arteries, blood

10 Circulatory System  Works closely with the respiratory system

11 excretory This system helps the body get rid of waste products
major organs: kidneys, urethra, ureters, bladder

12 * Helps the body get rid of waste * You can live with only 1 kidney!!!
Excretory System * Helps the body get rid of waste * You can live with only 1 kidney!!!

13 This system gives shape to the body and protects the inner organs
skeletal major organs: skull, rib cage, femur (bones)

14 Skeletal System  Gives shape to the body and protects other major organs  Works closely with the muscular system  The femur connects the hip bone to the knee.  An adult has 206 bones. Babies have over 300!

15 This system supplies oxygen to the cells and removes carbon dioxide from the blood
respiratory major organs: lungs, trachea, bronchia, alveoli, diaphragm

16 Respiratory System * Supplies oxygen to the cells and removes carbon dioxide from the blood * Works closely with the circulatory system

17 Which system works with the muscular system?
skeletal

18 Which system works closely with the circulatory system?
