The Peoples of the World For thousands of years, people from different places around the world have been trying to communicate with each other.

The Peoples of the World When communication between different groups of people is positive, or good- trade, friendship, or cooperation can occur.

The Peoples of the World When communication between different groups of people is negative, or bad, things like hate, distrust, and war can come about.

The Peoples of the World Different groups of people may not be able to communicate very easily because they don’t understand one another’s way of life.

The Peoples of the World Today we can communicate with others around the world very easily. Modern communications and transportation have made it easier to develop relations with people far away. So…… being able to communicate positively with different people & cultures is more important than ever.

Learning About the World Social Studies is a good way to learn about the world. Social Studies is broken up into 5 different areas of study: History Geography Government Economics Culture

History History is a record of the past. The people and events of the past have helped shape the world we live in today.

Geography Geography is the study of people, places, and the environment. The study of Geography focuses on 5 themes: LocationPlaceRegion Movement & Human-Environment Interaction

Government Every country has laws, or rules, that people live by. Government is the people or groups in a society or country that have the authority to make laws, to make sure they are carried out, and to settle disagreements about them.

Government In a limited government, everyone, including those in charge, must obey the laws. The U.S.A. has a limited government. Presidents have to obey the laws, just like you and I.

Types of Limited Government Direct Democracy People have the authority to make the laws directly. Republic People make laws through elected representatives. The USA has a Republic

Government In an Unlimited Government, the rulers can do whatever they want, regardless of the laws. Totalitarianism is a form of unlimited government. Germany had an unlimited government under Adolf Hitler. Very few exist today. North Korea is a modern example

Government A citizen is a legal member of a country. Citizens in the USA have rights, such as the right to vote in elections, and duties, such as paying taxes.

Economics Economics is the study of how people manage their resources by producing, exchanging, and using goods and services.

Economics People’s desires are unlimited. This means that everyone wants everything they can get. Unfortunately, there are not enough resources for everyone to get what they want or need. Scarcity refers to the Scarcity refers to the conflict between people’s unlimited desires and a limited amount of resources.

Economics Different countries have different levels of economic development. “Developing” In some places, like parts of Africa & Latin America, many people tend to be very poor and uneducated. “Developed” In other places, like America, people typically don’t go hungry and enjoy a comfortable life.

Types of Resources Natural Resources Gifts of nature, like trees, oil, coal, animals, & minerals. Human Resources Skills people have to produce goods and services. Capital Resources Things that people make, like machines, factories, computers, and trucks.

Culture Different groups of people have different traditions, languages, religions, and tastes (what they like). It is these differences that make each group unique. They are expressions of culture. Culture consists of the beliefs, customs, laws, art, and ways of living that a group of people share.

Culture Each kind of food, clothing, technology, religious belief, or language shared by a particular culture is called a Culture Trait.
