They were recruited as workers by the Australian government to replace the many thousands of Australian men who had been killed in the First World War (1914–1918). It tells us that he was born in Palmyra (the country we now call Syria). He joined the Roman army and was sent to Britain. He spent the rest of his life there. He married a British girl.
