2 Henrietta Szold Born in the United States in the year 1860, Henrietta Szold helped shape the political, cultural, and social worlds of Jews in both the United States and Israel. Active with USA Jewish immigrants, focusing heavily with their children treatment and education; also active in Zionism organization. 1909 – Visited Israel for the first time. 1912 – Established the Hadassah organization (first Hebrew School for nurses); this allowed clinics to be open around Israel. 1920 – Immigrated to Israel and later became a Zionist Management member. Managed education and health departments, and national committee social operations. 1933 – Established “Aliat Hanoar” (Youth Immigration) organization; managed this until she died in Jerusalem in 1945. 3 Hannah Szenes Born on July 17, 1921 in Hungary; a Palestinian Jew A poet and playwright, writing both in Hungarian and Hebrew. Joined the Maccabea group while in high school. 1943 – Enlisted into the British Army, where she did paratrooper training in Egypt. 1944 - Parachuted into Yugoslavia, where she was later captured and tortured. She was tried for treason late October and executed in early November by a German firing squad After the Cold War ended, a Hungarian military court pardoned her. Her family was informed in 1993. 4 Annelies Marie Frank Born June 12, 1929 in Germany; better known as Anne Frank. One of the most renowned and discussed Jewish victims of the Holocaust. Acknowledged for her writing quality in the most widely read book, her diary. (Also has been the basis for several plays and films) Around 1942, her family went into hiding from the Nazis. 1944 – Someone told about the family’s hiding place, and they were separated and sent to work camps. Anne and her sister, Margot, were at Auschwitz, but they were later sent to Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. 1945 – a few weeks before the camp was liberated; Anne and Margot died from typhus disease that spread rapidly through the camp. Her father was the only survivor from the family. He recovered and published his daughter’s diary. Memorial at the formal Bergen- Belsen site for Anne and Margot Frank

5 Golda Meir Born on May 3, 1898 in Kiev, Russia (Ukraine) Was the 4 th Prime Minister of Israel. (1 st woman in Israel and 3 rd woman in the world to hold such an office) Involved in workers union and played a main role in Mapai, Israel labor party. Active in Zionist politics Very popular in Israel Published an autobiography, My Life; made into a play and movie. Died in December 1978 of cancer. Golda Meir Library in Milwaukee

6 Natalie Hershlag Better known as her stage name, Natalie Portman Born June 9, 1981 in Jerusalem, Israel. Moved to the states when she was 3. Age 13 marked her feature film debut. In 1997, she played Anne Frank in the Broadway adaptation of The Diary of Anne Frank. Has dual citizenship in United States and Israel. Hershlag (Portman) has said “I really love the States… my heart’s in Jerusalem. That’s where I feel at home.” Natalie at the screening of Black Swan

Considers herself Jewish. 2002 - Began her theatrical training by attending and graduating from Professional’s Children School in Manhattan.
