MARY SEACOLE Mary Seacole was born in a country called Jamaica in 1805. Her father was a Scottish soldier and her mother was Jamaican.

MARY SEACOLE As Mary grew up she learned many nursing skills from her mother, who was known as a ‘doctress’, which was a person who healed the sick using plants and herbs.

MARY SEACOLE Mary then spent most of her adult life caring for people and also becoming a very successful businesswoman until, in 1854, she decided to go and help injured British soldiers in a war called the ‘Crimean war’.

MARY SEACOLE In 1854 she arrived and set up a hospital called ‘The British Hotel’ which gave injured soldiers a place to rest and recover.

MARY SEACOLE She also visited the battlefields and cared for the soldiers where they fell, injured.

MARY SEACOLE Soon, the stories of Mary’s work became well known and she became famous as one of the women who had saved many soldier’s lives.

Mary was famous because she saved the lives of many British soldiers in the Crimean war. SUMMARY: SO WHY WAS MARY SEACOLE FAMOUS?

INTERESTING FACTS When people were asked to donate money to help to look after Mary when she was an elderly lady, Queen Victoria secretly donated £50. 50,000 people turned up to celebrate Mary’s work when a party was held for her in London after the war.

FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE Florence Nightingale was an English nurse in 1853, at a time when Britain was fighting a war against Russia called ‘The Crimean War’.

FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE When news started to reach Britain about the terrible injuries that soldiers were suffering, Florence went to set up a hospital with 38 nurses whom she had personally trained.

FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE Soon, Florence and her nurses were saving many lives because of the modern methods they used, including improving the living conditions of the hospitals to prevent infection from spreading.

FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE At night, Florence would patrol the wards with a glowing lamp and for this reason she became known as ‘the lady with the lamp.’

FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE After the war was over, Florence helped to start many nursing colleges to train new nurses and many people now call her the ‘Mother’ of modern nursing.

She set up hospitals in the Crimean war and saved many soldier’s lives, becoming known as ‘The lady with the lamp.’ SUMMARY: SO WHY WAS FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE FAMOUS?

INTERESTING FACT Florence asked the famous engineer, Isambard Kingdom Brunel, to design a hospital that could be made in England and sent on a ship to the Crimea, which was another great success.

EDITH CAVELL Edith Cavell was born on the 4 th December 1865 and spent her life training to be a nurse.

EDITH CAVELL In 1914 the First World War started and Edith went to Belgium to help to nurse the soldiers.

EDITH CAVELL Soon, Belgium was invaded by the German army and Edith started to treat injured soldiers from both sides, and also Belgium and French civilians. A soldier in a First World War hospital

EDITH CAVELL However, soon the Germans discovered that, as well as nursing, Edith had helped over 200 British soldiers to escape in secret.

EDITH CAVELL They said that this was a ‘war crime’ and sentenced Edith to death.

On the 12 th October 1915, Edith was shot by a German firing squad. EDITH CAVELL

Edith is now remembered as a very brave person who cared for everybody and who died for her country. EDITH CAVELL

She saved the lives of many people, whatever country they came from, but was cruelly shot by the German army. SUMMARY: SO WHY WAS EDITH CAVELL FAMOUS?

INTERESTING FACT Edith was well known for using modern methods in her nursing, very much like Florence Nightingale, who had nursed in the Crimean war.
