To get from Atlantic to Pacific…

SETTING THE SCENE THE BOAT CAPTAIN WAITED PATIENTLY, AS HE HAD FOR THE LAST SEVERAL HOURS. ALL IN ALL, HE MIGHT WAIT UP TO 20 HOURS FOR HIS TURN. HOWEVER; BY WAITING THESE 20 HOURS, HE IS SAVING UP TO TWO WEEKS OF TRAVEL TIME. HE WAS WAITING TO GO THROUGH THE PANAMA CANAL.

LOCATE PANAMA ON THE MAP Panama Canal

TEXTBOOK PAGE BURRITO BOOK PAGE 5

Panama Canal Page Since the 1500s, sailors dreamed of a shortcut between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. In 1903, US President Theodore Roosevelt got Congress to approve work to build a canal in through Panama. Panama (after winning independence from Colombia) said it was ok.

SCIENTIFIC DEVELOPMENTS MAKE THE CANAL A REALITY New technologies and medicines helped the U.S. finish the canal. It took 8 years and 45,000 workers to complete it. Even today, it remains as one of the greatest engineering feats of modern times.

Can a ship climb stairs??? BUT WHAT ABOUT THE MOUNTAINOUS AREAS OF CENTRAL AMERICA? TO GET THROUGH THE CANAL, THE SHIP MUST BE RAISED AND LOWERED B/C OF THE MOUNTAINS. TO DO THIS, THE SHIP TRAVELS IN LOCKS. VIEW SHORT FILM ABOUT TRAVEL ON THE PANAMA CANAL.

Significance of the Canal THE PANAMA CANAL IS THE ONLY WAY TO GET FROM THE ATLANTIC TO THE PACIFIC OCEAN WITHOUT GOING AROUND SOUTH AMERICA. IT SAVES ABOUT 7,800 MILES. IT IS IN USE 24 HOURS A DAY AND 365 DAYS A YEAR. HOW DOES THIS IMPACT WORLD TRADE??

IMPACT OF THE PANAMA CANAL IT HAS GREATLY INCREASED INTERNATIONAL TRADE AND INTERDEPENDENCE BETWEEN NATIONS.

Other important canals THE SUEZ CANAL: CONNECTS THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA TO THE RED SEA AND INDIAN OCEAN. IT GREATLY SHORTENS THE WATER DISTANCE BETWEEN EUROPE AND ASIA. IT HAS ALSO INCREASED INTERNATIONAL TRADE….BUT HAS ATTRACTED PIRATES TO THE AREA. Pirates

Other Important Canals THE CANALS LINKING THE ST. LAWRENCE RIVER AND GREAT LAKES TO THE ATLANTIC OCEAN. IT LINKS TORONTO, QUEBEC, DETROIT, AND BUFFALO TO THE ATLANTIC OCEAN. THE INCREASED INDUSTRY MADE THE MIDWEST AND THOSE CITIES A MAGNET FOR IMMIGRATION. WHY???………FOR JOBS!!!

Part Two of International Trade Day… NAFTA and CAFTA

CAFTA Read page 196 about CAFTA. Complete the Venn Diagram.

Venn Diagram NAFTA CAFTA USA is a member of both No Tariffs!! Helps increase trade and interdependence between countries. Agreement with Mexico, US, and Canada Agreement with Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua

Bellwork: December 4 th Objective: Describe the impact of the Panama Canal 1.What do you think is represented by the picture below? 1.The puzzle pieces (are blue) symbolize the coming together of the two oceans by the Panama Canal. 2.The people on top of the squares (shaking hands) represent the increasing trade that resulted from the Panama Canal.
