Focus Skill: Make Predictions Created By: Agatha Lee October 2009

When you think about what will happen next, you are making a prediction.

You can make predictions about stories you read. I think...

Use details from the story to make a good prediction. Based on the details from the story, I predict...

You should also.... *Think about what has happened so far. * Think about what the characters have said and done. * Use what you know about real life.

Let’s practice!

A Day at the Courts Joseph was looking forward to playing tennis with his friend. First, he had to wait for his tennis partner to arrive. Then, they had to wait for for an empty court. When it was finally their turn to play tennis, it suddenly started to rain. They patiently waited for the rain to stop. As soon as the sun came out, Joseph smiled.

What will happen next? 1.Joseph and his tennis partner will go home. 2.Joseph will yell at his tennis partner. 3.Joseph and his tennis partner will play tennis together. 4.Joseph and his tennis partner will throw trash on the empty tennis court. 15

The Phone Call Marianna called her friend Nadia on the telephone. Marianna told her about the goal she made at her soccer game. She also told her about her new earrings. In addition, Marianna told Nadia about the new movie her mom had just bought her. Nadia finally asked, “Are you ready for that science test we have to take tomorrow?” Marianna gulped and said, “Oops! I forgot all about it. I better hang up now. Good-bye!”

What will happen next? 1.Marianna will tell her mom that she wants a new cell phone. 2.Nadia will decide not to be her friend anymore. 3.Marianna and Nadia will keep talking. 4.Marianna will hang up and start studying for her science test. 15

Camping Trip Seth and his family packed their camping gear and took a trip. Once they arrived at the campsite, they set up their tents and sleeping bags. They played a few games and then decided it was time to eat. They built a campfire and cooked hot dogs over the fire. After dinner, Seth’s dad gave everyone a stick and a marshmallow.

What will happen next? 15 1.Seth will use the stick as a sword and have a sword fight with his baby sister. 2. Seth and his family will make s’mores. 3.Seth’s dad will throw the entire bag of marshmallows on Seth’s sleeping bag. 4.Seth and his family will cook more hotdogs to eat.
