Pre War Background: Before Abraham Lincoln was even elected, the United States was on the verge of war The northern states and the southern states were divided on whether or not owning slaves was legal. The northern states said no, but they didn’t need slaves to run their factories The southern states needed slaves to run their plantations

The Election of 1860 Abraham Lincoln defeated Stephen Douglas in the election for President. The southern states didn’t like Lincoln After the election, South Carolina seceded from the Union (December 20, 1860) Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas followed. They made their own constitution and elected their own president, Jefferson Davis. Then Arkansas, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia joined what was now named the Confederacy

War breaks out The war officially started on April 19, 1861 when the Confederacy attacked Fort Sumter There were 150 significant battles fought in the Civil War.
