Now… Nation Splits in Two

A. Election of 1860 Lincoln, a Republican won because he won the Northern states that had larger populations. Some Southern states did not even have him on the ballot. Many Southerners now believed they no longer had a voice in the government and that the President and Congress were set against the issue of slavery.

B. Secession South Carolina was the first state to secede on December 20, 1860. By February SIX other state had followed them - Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. The seven states formed a new nation, the Confederate States of America and they chose Jefferson Davis as their first President.

C. Fort Sumter Located in South Carolina, this was one of the three Southern forts still controlled by the North in April 1861. On April 12, 1861, the Confederates asked for the surrender of the fort. Major Robert Anderson, the Union commander, refused to surrender so the Confederates opened fire.

C. Fort Sumter Short on ammunition, Fort Sumter surrendered on April 13. This first battle marked the beginning of a war that would last FOUR terrible years.
