1-7 Three Dimensional Figures Surface Area and Volume Day 2 What is surface area? What is volume? How do you know what formulas to use?

Identify and name three-dimensional figures. Find surface area and volume.

Definition A prism is a polyhedron with two identical polygonal faces called bases that lie in parallel planes. The other parallelogram-shaped faces are lateral faces.

Rectangular Prism We often refer to rectangular prisms as boxes.

A pyramid is a polyhedron. Pyramids have only one base. The vertices of the base are connected to one point called the vertex of the pyramid. The height of the pyramid is the length of its altitude (goes through the center).

A cylinder has two congruent circular bases in parallel planes. The axis of a cylinder is the segment that joins the centers of the bases. Right cylinder—the axis is perpendicular to the base. An altitude of a cylinder is a segment that joins the planes of the bases and is perpendicular to them. The height of a cylinder is the length of the altitude. Parts of a Cylinder

right cylinder altitude axis radius

Parts of a Cone A cone has a vertex and a circular base. The axis of a cone is the segment from the vertex to the center of the base. In a right cone, the axis is perpendicular to the base. vertex axis height (H) slant height (slant)

A sphere has no bases. The one important measurement in a sphere is the radius. The radius goes from the center to any edge. r = 5

How to calculate Surface Area or Volume The first question you need to ask is: What shape is the base? Find the shape on the polygon card. What is the height? Then ask, what kind of figure is it and go to that formula on the three dimensional card. There is a key for all of the abbreviations at the bottom of the page.

Find Surface Area and Volume Find the surface area and volume of the cone. π π Use a calculator..

Find Surface Area and Volume Answer: The cone has a surface area of about 75.4 cm 2 and a volume of about 37.7 cm 3. r = 3, h = 4 Volume of a cone Simplify. Use a calculator.

A.surface area = 2520 in 2 B.surface area = 18 in 2 C.surface area = 180 in 2 D.surface area = 1144 in 2 A. Jenny has some boxes for shipping merchandise. Each box is in the shape of a rectangular prism with a length of 18 inches, a width of 14 inches, and a height of 10 inches. Find the surface area of the box.
