ATP Stands for adenosine triphosphate ATP is the form of energy that cells use

CELLULAR RESPIRATION EQUATION

Oxygen + Glucose Carbon Dioxide + Water + ATP

TYPES OF CELLULAR RESPIRATION Aerobic – uses oxygen to produce ATP (energy) Produces 36 ATP Anaerobic – does NOT use oxygen to produce ATP (energy) Produces 2 ATP 2 Types Alcoholic Fermentation Lactic Acid Fermentation

ALCOHOLIC FERMENTATION  When alcohol is produced in a system CO 2 is released  This CO2 can be converted in your cells to O 2  The O2 will be used in your system to fuel other reactions  Example: yeast cells and grape juice mixed in a closed container will release CO 2, no oxygen required  Often occurs in plants

LACTIC ACID FERMENTATION  Created in your muscles as a result of strenuous exercise  The lactic acid build up will be converted to your cells and used as an oxygen source over time  If you are experiencing muscle fatigue, you may have lactic acid build up because your body has not converted the lactic acid into your cell as quickly as it is building up  This is an ongoing process  Build up of acid can be converted to O 2  Often occurs in muscle cells
