 The Founding Fathers wanted to form a government that did not allow one person to control the country.  Think about how England was treating the colonist…

The Constitution created a government with three separate branches, each with its own distinct powers.

 Each branch has its own responsibilities  This separation was implemented to make sure no single branch had too much power.

 Lets look at the Three Branches of Government.

 Branch 1 – The Legislative Branch.  This Branch is located in the United States Capital Building in Washington D.C.

 The Legislative Branch or Congress of government has the authority to make laws for the nation.

 Congress is split into two different sections…the Senate and the House of Representatives.

 Congress’s primary duty is to write, debate, and pass bills or laws which are then passed on to the President for approval.

 Makes laws controlling trade between states and between the United States and other countries.

 Makes laws about taxes and borrowing money.

 Approves the making of money (special coins).

 Can declare war on other countries.
