SAFE 543 Construction Safety Week One Chat Session Review of Syllabus Review of Case Studies Format for Preplanning Guide Chat Session Guidelines Case Study #1

SAFE 543 Construction Safety Textbooks Hill, Daryl, C. Construction Safety Management and Engineering. American Society of Safety Engineers, Des Plaines, IL, Code of Federal Regulations 29, Part 1926 Construction Standards. U.S. Government Printing Office, Washington, DC. Current edition. OR the student must access and use 29 CFR standards online at the OSHA website.

SAFE 543 Construction Safety Review of Syllabus Course Organization - The six modules of SAFE 543 Construction Safety have the following components: One real-world case study with four focusing on pre-planning and hazard evaluation Notes and links to other sites to give you information necessary to complete objectives, assignments and case studies Weekly readings from the text to supplement the course content Weekly “Chat Sessions” to review material and discuss questions/issues Assignments embedded within the notes to apply course content

SAFE 543 Construction Safety Review of Case Studies An overview of the case study and the construction job is found as a link on the course content home page in D2L. Additional information on each module case study is found as a hyperlink within all modules after the module objectives. This introduction provides you an overview of the construction project which will be needed when completing each module’s case study. Be sure to follow the Preplanning Report Format for the case studies for Modules 2-6.

SAFE 543 Construction Safety Preplanning Report Format I.Introduction: In this section of the report, the student should briefly describe the phase of construction for which the report was prepared, the purpose of the report and identify the scope of activities covered within this specific report. II. Background Information and Possible Subcontractors Involved: Here the student should list what kind of subcontractors may be performing the work during this phase of construction. III. Identify/Evaluate/Control Hazards: In this section, the student should focus on the frequency and severity of the actual/potential hazards (risk assessment) and how this hazard will be evaluated, i.e. standards used to evaluate. The activities and hazards must be prioritized in descending order, i.e. number 1 listed as the activity that presents the greatest risk. Provide citations for your hazard selections NOTE: Do not discuss all the possible hazards but focus on the TWO MAJOR hazards for each of THREE Major activities in a particular phase of the job and for this specific site. The hazards must be unique across all case studies. For example, do not cite transportation hazards for every phase of the construction project. 1.Construction Phase - Activity (i.e. Site Preparation - Excavation) A. Actual/Potential Hazard: Identify the hazard B. Evaluation: Here the student should list the number of employees potentially exposed, describe the hazards' potential effects and discuss how this hazard will be evaluated (identify standards where appropriate). C. Controls: The student should list the controls that they would recommend for this hazard. The controls must consider all three areas: Engineering controls Administrative controls (Programs/Policies/Training) PPE

SAFE 543 Construction Safety Example of Section Three Construction Phase – Activity: Finishing Work Actual/Potential Hazard: Severe Injury/Fatality Resulting from Improper Use and Handling of Power Tools. Evaluation: It is anticipated that workers will be using a variety of power tools to complete the finishing work for the site. Examples of work that will performed include installation of HVAC systems, electrical, drywall, etc. Examples of power tools include sanders, grinders, drills, etc. Controls: Employers will be expected to comply with the 1926.xxxx standard for power tools. Controls shall include selection of power tools that meet OSHA standards, inspections…..[BE SPECIFIC] Etc. Resources: OSHA regulations 29 CFR (b)(2) Safety Training and Education OSHA regulations 29 CFR Tools – Hand and Power – General Requirements OSHA regulations 29 CFR Power Operated Hand Tools OSHA regulations 29 CFR Abrasive Wheels and Tools OSHA regulations 29 CFR Woodworking Tools OSHA regulations 29 CFR Respiratory Protection

SAFE 543 Construction Safety Live Classroom The first part of the Chat Session will be an opportunity for me to review some of the major concepts covered in this weeks class. I will use PowerPoint slides to address most of this information. The Chat Sessions are not counted as contact time. They are supplemental to the course requirements. Following this overview, there will be an opportunity for you to ask any questions regarding the Module content, assignments or case study. At the end of each Chat Session, archives will be posted.

SAFE 543 Construction Safety Assignments Please upload all assignments through D2L. I will only grade one assignment submission. Do not send one through D2L, a different one through , etc. The first one I come across will be the one I grade. Make sure your NAME is on the word document for assignments and case studies. I will be using the D2L to respond to individual students.

SAFE 543 Construction Safety Assignments Every semester I make changes so you can not take the work from previous students. I will also be using “Turnitin” software to evaluate plagiarism. Make sure when you use material from any source that it is referenced and cited in the text! Late assignment penalty, see the syllabus Once the graded assignments are returned to students, I will not accept additional submissions.

Case Study #1 For your first case study, you will need to develop a set of criteria for selecting sub-contractors based upon the following performance measures: Accident/Injury Performance Measures Loss Measures pertaining to Workers’ Comp, Property, Auto, and Liability Safety Program Measures

Case Study #1 For each measure, include the process an organization would be expected to follow in terns of data to be collected, how it would be analyzed, and decisions made.
