Officer Positions - 5 th graders only President: Create and type agendas, facilitate Student Council meetings and meet with Ms. Stennie, Ms. Franczak, and Mrs. Butler as needed. Vice-President: Take the President’s place when he/she is absent. Take roll at meetings. Treasurer: Maintain accurate financial records and report to student council. Secretary: Take notes during the meetings. Read minutes from the previous meeting. Write appropriate letter to others (thank you notes). Historian: Create and collaborate with PTO Yearbook Committee on activities. Reporter: Work with EPSN

Officer Requirements-5 th graders only Primary Requirements: Nominees must maintain an “A/B” average in all subjects. All nominees will need 3 different staff signatures that will vouch that the nominee will uphold his/her responsibilities. (refer to the Primary Election Sheet) Student behavior must be exemplary. Nominees must have a parent sign the Primary Election Sheet. Students will be expected to be role models and leaders of the student body. You may only run for ONE officer position. If you are in the top 3 of the Primary Election: Nominees will be expected to campaign by preparing a maximum of FOUR posters. Nominees will need to write a speech to present during the morning news. (Speech and poster requirements will be sent home after the primary election.)

Overall Responsibilities for Officers (5 th graders only) Overall Responsibilities: To voice student concerns and help keep EPES students informed about special events. Help with greetings during special school functions. Promote school and PTO functions. Promote and sponsor school spirit days. Support our community by developing and participating in community service. (SLT meetings, service projects, etc.) Officers must attend student council meetings held before school once a month.

Speech Specifications for Officers (5 th graders only) Specifications for Officer Speeches Greeting Attention Getter - the hook. A statement or rhetorical question (a question you don’t actually answer) to sit your audience up with open ears and mind Who you are - your name, your grade and current teacher in the school What you want - the role you are campaigning for: President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, Historian, or Reporter. What improvements are you going to bring to the community-what steps are you going to take to accomplish goal (s). (Brief summary -you will expand this in the body of your speech.) Credibility - your qualification for this position. Body Your Main Idea - Your goal for the role, what you want to achieve, how you plan to do it, and the benefits to the audience. Conclusion Summary of main idea Re-statement of what you want - to be elected to the role you're running for Re-statement of the benefits to the audience Closer, clincher, call for action

Class Representatives-4 th and 5 th grade One representative from each 4 th and 5 th grade class Your child will need to attend monthly meeting which will be held of Thursday mornings at 7:30am. They will participate in the meetings and then report to their class about different events and service projects we will do throughout the school year. In addition to reporting back to their homeroom class they will also be assigned to K-3 classroom to report back about events and service projects that are taking place. They will help promote these events and projects to our school community.

Class Representative Elections In each 4 th and 5 th grade classroom, the teacher will facilitate their own class representative election. The representative will be chosen by Friday, November 6 th.

School Service Projects Student Council will be helping with the following events this year: Can food drive-November Pennies for Patients-March A Child’s Place Service Project-April Sponsor spirit week-TBD

Key Dates to Remember Friday, October 9 th – Primary Election Sheets due to Mrs. Butler Friday, October 16 th – Primary Election Monday – Friday October 26 th – 30 th - Videos of Speeches shown on Morning News (officers) Friday, October 30 th – Whole School Elections for Officers Friday, November 6 th – Class Representatives Deadline Thursday, November 12 th – First Student Council Meeting at 7:30am The dates for the rest of the Student Council Meetings for the year will be handed out at our first meeting.
