2 What is a Platform? The values or actions a political party favors and promotes in order to gain support of voters Democratic Platform Republican Platform

3 What Now? Work on your logo and platform (due at the end of class)
Remember, a platform is the ideas and actions you want to see happen

4 Think about your campaign, particularly the office/position for which
Do Now 1/21 (on paper): Think about your campaign, particularly the office/position for which you are running. What are the responsibilities/expectations for someone who holds that position?

5 Reminder About Appeals – 10 minutes
With your partner, read p in the River Reader book

6 Brainstorming Part 1 – 5 min
Who will be the audience for your speech? How can you best appeal to them and their concerns? How are you going to immediately catch their attention?

7 Brainstorming Part 2 – 5 Minutes
How are you going to establish your credibility on your selected platform? What makes you qualified to occupy the role you have selected?

8 Brainstorming Part 3 – 10 Minutes
What opposition may exist toward your platform? How will you fairly address this opposition then prove it to be false?

9 Brainstorming Part 4 – 5 Minutes
What other types of support can you incorporate in order to strengthen your speech? Types of Support Predicting Consequences Examples Facts Referring to an Authority

10 What Now? Using the elements you have brainstormed, put together a rough outline to show the order in which you plan to organize your speech.

Introduction Greeting/ Attention Getter - the hook.  Who you are  What you want - the role you are campaigning for What you are going to do for the audience - benefits to them in exchange for their vote (Brief summary) Credibility - (Brief)

Body Your Main Idea 1 - Your goal for the role, what you want to achieve, how you plan to do it, the benefits to the audience, your fitness for the job, transition to... Main Idea 2 - Supporting ideas - details and examples - transition to... Main Idea 3 - Supporting ideas - details and examples - transition to... ***Only include a second and third idea if you have time to expand on them. If not, move through to the conclusion.
