AVI 1O – Grade 9 Art

PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN Now that you know the elements of art, you need to understand how to design art that looks interesting and comfortable to viewers. The PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN include: BALANCE CONTRAST EMPHASIS MOVEMENT PATTERN RHYTHM UNITY/VARIETY

AVI 1O – Grade 9 Art BALANCE Refers to the arrangements of elements on either side of a centre line. Shapes, colours and values can be arranged to create a sense of comfort and balance. Symmetrical / Asymmetrical / Radial / Value / Shape / Colour / Texture

AVI 1O – Grade 9 Art CONTRAST This means the difference in values, colours or other art elements when they are placed together. This makes art more exciting and interesting. VALUE CONTRAST Shows the difference between two colours / hues / shades INTENSITY CONTRAST The difference between a pure colour beside a mixed colour TEMPERATURE CONTRAST Shows the difference between warm and cool colours SIZE CONTRAST Shows the difference between small and large objects VALUE CONTRAST / COLOUR INTENSITY / TEXTURE / SHAPE / WARM & COOL

AVI 1O – Grade 9 Art EMPHASIS Creating a design that focuses the eye on the most interesting or important parts of the work. What are the most interesting parts of these images? How are the viewers eyes drawn to these areas? COLOUR DOMINANCE / FOCUS AREAS / SHAPE EMPHASIS

AVI 1O – Grade 9 Art MOVEMENT Movements takes viewers on a trip through a work of art. Our eyes move along edges and lines and leads us to focus on the most important areas of a work of art LINE MOVEMENT / VISUAL MOVEMENT / PERSPECTIVE

AVI 1O – Grade 9 Art PATTERN Artists create patterns to make interesting designs in works of art. Different patterns include RADIAL, REGULAR, REPEATED, RANDOM or PLANNED. PLANNED / RANDOM / REPETITION / LINES / COLOURS

AVI 1O – Grade 9 Art RHYTHM Rhythm means the flow of art – like heartbeats, music, walking or dancing has flow – and includes the repetition of colours, shapes, forms, lines or values. Rhythm brings art together to make it look organized. REGULAR / IRREGULAR / REPETITION / FLOW

AVI 1O – Grade 9 Art UNITY / VARIETY This makes art feel complete or finished because everything seems to work together. Variety makes art exciting by keeping things looking different but balanced. LINE / COLOUR / TEXTURE / SHAPE / VALUE / BALANCE
