Community-Based Forestry in the United States CBF Research

Status Report

Support for CBF research has been relatively scarce Research typically built on informal relationships Diversity of CBF makes drawing conclusions challenging

Status Report Potential of participatory research is largely untapped Significant efforts to assess and document CBF impacts on the ground (eg multi-party monitoring)

Key Research Questions: Learning What is Working & What Is Needed

Research Questions Can CBF provide clear & measurable benefits to rural communities? Is CBF an effective way to restore & maintain healthy ecological systems?

Research Questions How are the benefits from CBF distributed within communities? How do communities develop the capacity to capture benefits & be effective long- term stewards?

Research Questions Where do CBF & communities fit in the global economy? What role do communities play in reducing forest fragmentation? What role do funders & support organizations in CBF?
