2 2 Context Small but important part of local economy Limited commercial harvesting to date Majority of timber accessed on existing roads within the Ministry of Forests “Administrative Areas” along Wilson Creek and near Fourth of July Creek. Harvesting is typically in 1 hectare.

3 3 Management Issues to Address Potential conflict between harvesting and environmental, ecosystem and cultural values Visual quality

4 Goals Commercial Forestry:  remains small-scale, community based and contributes to local jobs  Sustains social and ecological values  protects important cultural sites, features and landscapes 4

5 Objectives Secure long-term timber supply for local needs Maintain opportunities for non-commercial use (firewood, personal building material) Maintain visual quality Minimize impacts on wildlife and cultural values 5

6 Zoning Concept under discussion Draft zone map developed  Commercial Forest Harvest Zone O’Donnell to Yukon, east side of lake  No Commercial Forest Harvest Zone Remainder of the LUP Area 6

7 Commercial Forest Harvest Zone Boundaries to be refined Will be “no harvest areas” within the zone to protect critical habitats & cultural sites Still under discussion 7

8 No Commercial Forest Harvest Zone Would exclude all forms of commercial forest tenure Would not exclude non forestry related harvest (e.g. mineral properties, road R/W to access mineral claims) Would not exclude non-commercial use (e.g. firewood, personal building material) 8

9 9 How are goals and objectives met? Vast majority of plan area is No Commercial Forest Harvesting Protects social, environmental, ecological, cultural values across majority of plan area (no harvest) Maintains visual quality west of Atlin Lake (no harvest)

10 Goals and Objectives (cont’d) Maintains habitats of key concern, particularly caribou winter range (little /no harvest ) Maintains local accessible timber supply (in forestry zone) Maintains opportunity for commercial harvest in Atlin area (in forestry zone) Maintains opportunities for non-commercial forest use across plan area 10
