RELATIONSHIPS HEALTHY/UNHEALTHY WAYS TO END UNHEALTHY

CHARACTERISTICS OF HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS MUTUAL RESPECT TRUST HONESTY SUPPORT FAIRNESS/EQUALITY SEPARATE IDENTITIES(INDIVIDUALITY) GOOD COMMUNICATION SAFETY ACCEPTANCE

WHAT’S AN UNHEALTHY RELATIONSHIP? A RELATIONSHIP IS UNHEALTHY IF IT INVOLVES ANY OF THE FOLLOWING BEHAVIORS: MEAN DISRESPECTFUL CONTROLLING ABUSIVE

Attraction? How many of you can remember a time when you met someone new, and you had an intense attraction to that person? What do we call it when someone has an intense attraction to another person? Infatuation or crush

How do we decide on our relationships? How does infatuation affect a person’s thinking and behavior? What are you likely to do when you start a new relationship? What are things we should do in the early stages of a relationship?

Gathering Information One way to clarify your thinking about relationships is to get input from parents, other trusted adults, and respected friends. When gathering information from others how do you know if you are getting reliable information?

ENDING AN UNHEALTHY RELATIONSHIP Don’t break up in person if you do not feel safe Break up in public place if you do so in person, bring your cell phone or a friend or family member with You don’t need to explain your reason for breaking up more than once. Let your friends & family know you plan on ending the relationship.

ENDING RELATIONSHIP CONT. Don’t go to the door, if your ex comes to your house when you’re alone. Trust your gut, if you feel afraid then it’s not a good thing. Ask for help

HOW TO HELP A FRIEND Listen Talk to them in private Let them know why you are concerned Offer to get them information Mention people they can talk to Let them know you are there to help Direct them to websites or hotlines Loveisrespect.org—teen dating abuse website National Teen Dating Violence hotline
